Gimli, son of Glóin and nephew of Óin, both former companions to Bilbo Baggins. He was a descendant of Durin the Deathless. He joined the Fellowship when it formed in Rivendell with the mission to destroy the One Ring. Gimli became a life long friend to Legolas Greenleaf, an Elf, during this epic story and their friendship helped heal the rift between the Dwarves and the Mirkwood Elves. During his adventures both Gimli and Legolas defended the Fortress of Helm’s Deep from the besieging forces from Isengard, sent by the dark wizard Saruman.
