Hello, Anyone have this two to check if there are any remarkable difference between them?
November 23, 2017 at 9:25 am #36663Hello, Anyone have this two to check if there are any remarkable difference between them?
November 23, 2017 at 11:04 pm #36666Well, from those tiny pics being provided I just guess that the hilt of the sword seems to be longer with the new MZ-one. I will be able in a few days to judge better after having received the “new” figure/version.
November 25, 2017 at 3:29 pm #36667Alright, I received the new Aragorn MZ647 figure today, so I can tell more about differences compared with the old version.
My guess about the longer hilt of the sword was right. But the blade is about 2mm shorter than the old one. The new figure consists of three parts (figure, base, arm with sword) as the old one was casted as a single piece (which caused the blade of the sword being bent by the blister – at least with the figure I once received).
To be honest: the new figure is of a definitely lesser quality than the old one: With nearly all the details some “depth” in terms of 3D is missing: the chainmail is nearly “flat”, the scabbard misses the details of the old one, the details at the back of the figure (blanket, bottle, etc.) are gone and the head … well, I first thought it is a different person compared with the old Aragorn. The once individual appearance is completely gone as there is no depth in it any more (I don’t complain about that ridiculous haircut which still seems to be similar).
All in all I am absolutely disappointed about that new figure as from my point of view it is a really bad casting compared with the old figure. I’m afraid that even priming the figure will not imrove it at all, as there is the risk that the primer might cover all the few details that are left if you don’t use it very carefully.Well, as you might have guessed by now I am very disappointed because Mithril announced that the new 3D-sculpting is able to reveil more and better details. – Sorry, but this MZ647 just proves the opposite.
If you’re interested I could try and provide some pictures next week, just to prove my statements here.November 25, 2017 at 3:54 pm #36668Sorry, I cannot hold back another criticism about the new figures.
From today I admire the magic possibilities of Galadriel even more after having received the MZ641 (Frodo and the mirror of Galadriel). Obviously she’s able to shrink the table and the flagon to mere Hobbit-size (compared with the M136). If I remember well in the novel Frodo had to step (!) up to have a glance into the mirror. Now he looks down into it, the table at waist-height.
I placed the old M136 Galadriel next to the new table … alas … it just is as high as her knees … strange magic that is I think.
Personally I do like the older design of the table better as it more clearly reminds of branches and roots.November 25, 2017 at 6:20 pm #36669Theobald wrote:Sorry, I cannot hold back another criticism about the new figures. From today I admire the magic possibilities of Galadriel even more after having received the MZ641 (Frodo and the mirror of Galadriel). Not the company’s fault, but if I had realised this vignette was on the way I would have ordered a different figure than Frodo recently
November 25, 2017 at 6:37 pm #36670the fact we have lost all kinds of communication between Chris and the community does not help
we are not even given the choice of what should be a vignette or not…. we will have to support the price of a vignette release we did not choose (no matter if it is great or not) but we don’t have the choice to submit a vignette of our own anymore… that’s not fair
November 25, 2017 at 6:48 pm #36671We cannot be sure if the announced vignette you refer to depicts the same scene. – But … what else?
Anyway this MZ641 to me is very strange in terms of scale and size.November 25, 2017 at 7:09 pm #36672Sorry, Gildor, I just read your entry after having written mine. I was reacting to David’s entry.
Well, I don’t think that us customers should be allowed to decide about each and everything. There’s no company that could cope with that. I’m sure you’re referring to the Fellowship-idea, as the old M-series obviously and unfortunately have been cancelled for good. Imagine to combine all the ideas of a figure of, let’s say, at least 50 people to have a common agreement. That would take at least a year or even more, I guess.
This “we produce what you want – strategy” does not convince everybody with its results. I always thought it better having the releases provided as it once was with the old M-series.
To be honest … Mithril production has just shifted from “M” to “MS” and now to “MZ”. (I know that this is slightly provocative, but I’m also slightly annoyed about certain developments.)
November 25, 2017 at 7:27 pm #36673the problem is master ent, that it seems this Galadriel vignette is not a regular release, but a Gold fellowship release.. which has implications in terms of availability AND costs… (regular releases are more widespread and cost less to customers…)
I have nothing against having a vignette produced entirely on mithril own suggestions, that’s great, but I am quite upset that we are no more given the right to suggest vignettes ourselves while Mithril have no problem to produce one by themselves when they see fit…
November 25, 2017 at 11:51 pm #36677Where did you all get the information on a new vignette being produced? This is the first that I’ve heard of it. Also, I’m disappointed to here about the detail in the new figures. We were assured that the new 3D sculpting was going to improve detail not take it away. Wasn’t one of the reason given for discontinuing the application of primer because it was stated that the new figures had so much minute detail their primer was covering it up?
I must admit to being a bit disappointed in Mithril lately. Between the long delays in getting figures produced, the discontinuation of the Mithril-grey primer, the new 3D sculpting (less detail) and how it was suppose to decrease production costs (making it less expensive for the buyer?), no Chris Tubb communication, almost always “single figure” months for suggestions and what appears to be the beginnings of a lack of continuity between figures (as seen by the new MZ641) it’s starting to become worrisome.
I admit that I’m still fairly new to all of this and perhaps I’m overreacting but when I read veterans such as Masters Inglorion and Theobald express concern it makes me wonder.
This is not an inexpensive hobby as my bank account can painfully attest to this past year. I briefly became excited again when news broke of Christopher Tolkien’s retirement hoping that might free up Mithril to do Silmarillion figures but have heard nothing to suggest this might be so. I’m extremely close to getting a “complete” Mithril collection (with the exception of the few unattainable pieces Chr1988, 1992, Morlas, etc.) and hate to admit to wondering if I should continue. Rest assured I’m nowhere close to stopping yet but it has entered my mind for the first time.
November 26, 2017 at 12:04 am #36678Er, correct me if I’m wrong, please, but the last “regular” M-releases were the Arkenstone vignette and the 5 “Helm’s Deep III” figures. As it seems to me that was the end of Mithril’s M-series.
What is left is the MS-fellowship production. Now MS has been changed to MZ, which for me now obviously does not mean better quality in the castings. Mithril announced that because of the new 3D-sculpting (Z-brush) details of the figures will become better. I still cannot see that.
Well, by now I am of a different opinion. – What do we clearly have now?
– nearly each figure is a kind of “set” to be assembled (though I think separating the bases from the figures is a step forward again, as it once was with some of the figures of the old LR-series. It will please all diorama-builders, I’m sure.).
– the figures now are not primed (same as with the older LR-series) which saves the company a small amount, so that they don’t have to raise the prices for the figures. M. O’Brien pointed out that Mithril did not raise prices for the figures for a long time.
Anyway, I’m a collector still, come rain or shine …
November 26, 2017 at 12:24 am #36679Sorry, mindx2.
With my last entry I just tried to react to Gildor’s entry. – Sorry again, but you should know that trees cannot haste. So it always takes some time to consider whether to type, or to think, or … well, you know.
… though “worrisome” is a good word you used for that development I was referring to.November 26, 2017 at 12:25 am #36680last figures tend to look more and more like the old LR range which was unprimed and required lot of assembly… and this range, back in 1999 signed the decline of Mithril in the first place… very bad choice of marketing strategy back in the days, and I think bad strategy now too
i would give quite a lot to be able to discuss head to head with Echoriath right now (the nickname by which Chris Tubb is going…… on MMP actually, he IS one of us and has been for years…breaking news for a lot of people I suppose…)
to answer some of your questions David :– About this Galadriel in wrath, well it’s included in the last newsletter we received in mail from Michael…
– About Silmarillion figures, that is too soon, maybe we’ll see some but it’ll have to wait some months or years I suppose, that’s not something that can be achieved right away, licencing structures have to be put in place and I’m sure a lot of actors (not only for figurines) are craving for rights to produce any kind of derivated products from the Silm….
– about the figurines you miss, well I’m sure there could be a way to get Morlas still. It seems Chris still had some. but for Chr1988 and 1992 or even 1990 that may be harder…November 26, 2017 at 12:52 am #36681Has there been any “official” word on the M-series? My checklist provided by the fine folks here show that the Fire of Orthanc line (M554-550) is still to be produce?
Also a quick question: What are MZ643, MZ644 and MZ645 suppose to be? Have we heard yet?
November 26, 2017 at 1:08 am #36685about 643 644 and 645 no idea yet… it is quite often that mithril makes holes in their range and we gladly remind them of these holes so they fill them and not forget them… (they used to…)
the fire at orthanc (helm’s deep 3) is the last “regular” series to be produced yep… I think they are still available yet.. and helm’s deep 4 was to be made too though we don’t know when or how..
many regular ranges were planned, since 2006, a lot of them have never seen the light of day… (easterlings cavalry being the most famous “never released”…)
November 26, 2017 at 10:51 am #36686After all those informations I’m not completely sure that I’ll order MZ647… Or I’ll wait on clearance sell 2025…
November 26, 2017 at 11:03 am #36687About Galadriel in wrath…. Michael wrote that her number will be MZ648 and that will be on sale from the beginning of December… so we’ll soon see how she’ll look like….
And about Frodo and the the mirror… who knows maybe he recently also drink a water from Fangorn forest
November 26, 2017 at 11:12 am #36688…and in final, I don’t like very much new unprimed figures…
The breaking news about C.T, you mentioned Gildor, for me is definitely breaking news… and it is very good to know…. but is also very sad that we do not have any kond of contacts with him anymore ….
