It has also arrived here as well so I can get cracking on it. I am going for Orthanc (I think ) as a setting because I had already pre-formed an idea in my mind about how I wanted the base design to look, although it does look quite Elvish to me as well.
If I can afford a second set before they sell out, it may make a good starting point for another scene that needs doing
P.s. has anyone else noticed that Mithril made a boo-boo regarding the scale of their figures on the box art work? A small strip of paper stating 32mm scale stuck over 28mm scale – you would have thought that they would have known by now what scale their figures are 😆
December 11, 2010 at 8:19 pm #13970It’s not only pulling off that small strip, Master Ddaines.
In case you dare to pull off further you’ll see the golden inscription reading “the Edman – collection” imprinted on the blue box. 😆
That box was first used for Mithril with the release of the MX-UP.
I think the box is very nice and and gives it some exclusiveness, which is topped by the content.December 11, 2010 at 8:32 pm #13971As for the pattern of the floor and the table, you’re guessing right, Master Ddaines. It’s not only that it looks like Elvish. It definitely is.
It could be based on “Melian”. Have a look at p.196 in J.R.R. Tolkien “Artist and Illustrator” by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull.
Anyway, it’s good old Elvish design.December 12, 2010 at 1:39 am #13978P 196 is very interesting, Master Theo. As I said before, I am not quiete sure still.
Painted four faces tonight. And realised that time is running fast. So better to have some pillow talk soon . . .December 12, 2010 at 6:35 pm #13991So, there are some fellows here taken place in that painting competition.
There are many things to focus on. Not only priming the miniature but where to put it on? On the cork???
I came to the conclusion to drill a hole into the miniature for putting inside a steel pin.
Put the steel pin inside the cork and add some super xxx-glue.
Then you have the possibility to reach every zone with your brush . . .[imgz url=http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/32_box_001.jpg]http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/thumbs/32_box_001.jpg[/imgz] [imgz url=http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/32_box080.jpg]http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/thumbs/32_box080.jpg[/imgz]
December 12, 2010 at 8:52 pm #13997This topic can also be prepared for painting battle…. I will decide about painting details once when I see figures in my hands… Thus I still have no inspiration for any comments or pictures like these ….
But part of this topic could become “Work in progress” section for this competition…
December 16, 2010 at 8:11 pm #14055Well, not really much interest here in this topic . . . Everybody seems to busy . . .
Painting the face of Mistress Galadriel actually a special thought reaches me:
. . . she´s got Bette Davis eyes . . .I have to work on . . .
December 16, 2010 at 8:18 pm #14056I am still waiting for mine to start competiton. I have no special idea except my painting shall remain as already done for Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond other minis.
I have a question for every one: What is written on papers on the table ?December 16, 2010 at 8:53 pm #14058Today I received a package from the Ireland…. next week I’m going to buy new colors and during the Christmas and New Year holidays I will try to paint this beautiful piece of Mithril…. on the papers on the table would be written part of middle earth history… for me… but we can imagine a handful of secret thoughts from kingdom of Valar….

I have a question for every one: What is written on papers on the table ?The big scrolls could be a maps. One of the whole Northwest of Middle-eart (the big one) and the other one of Mirkwood (because the Necromancer’s presence). And the small one (is it a book?) could have some tengwar-like scripture.
December 17, 2010 at 12:04 am #14062A map was also my intention, Master Arthadan. The right choice in this case.
Somekind of a elvish edition of Midle-Earth. Or a closer look to Rhovanion. Or in fact Thror´s map! As you pointed out.Well, are there really eight chairs o paint . . . uff. A kind of boring . . .
December 18, 2010 at 1:58 pm #14073To prevent that every contest-partner will show a Orthanc base . . .
Could it be imaginable that the White Council took place at different places? Maybe at Rivendell. Maybe at Lothlorien . . . Maybe elsewhere . . .
What do you think?December 18, 2010 at 4:41 pm #14074Turambar wrote:To prevent that every contest-partner will show a Orthanc base . . .Could it be imaginable that the White Council took place at different places? Maybe at Rivendell. Maybe at Lothlorien . . . Maybe elsewhere . . .
What do you think?I may just go for a combination Master Turambar for a bit of contrast.
December 18, 2010 at 5:51 pm #14075See, you don’t need a tree for Christmas-riddles ….

While we’re here, I recall that a map of Middle-earth was posted that showed an ‘extension’ of ME. Are you able to recall where this map was posted please?
December 18, 2010 at 7:09 pm #14077Yes, I can.
December 18, 2010 at 7:24 pm #14078Sorry, I just had to go to my study to find out ….
I think the best that might help you about maps based on Tolkien is
“The Atlas of Middle Earth” by Karen Wynn Fonstad
published 1991 … I don’t know if that book still is available. But it’t a marvellous source.December 18, 2010 at 7:33 pm #14080Yes, I have that one Master Tree, but I thought I saw posted somewhere an extended ‘interpretation’ of what ME may have looked like, but since asking I may have found this image anyway.
As you say, KWF’s book may be best for what I need it for, many thanks
December 18, 2010 at 10:44 pm #14083Best maps ever … though sometimes a bit … ahem … interpreted. Cheers.

Excuse me for jumping in. The map you are refering to is the Ambarkanta (meaning “Shape of the World”). It’s a chapter in The Shaping of Middle-earth, the fourth volume of The History of Middle-earth series, which includes an sketch by Tolkien himself:

For a detalied well-thought map based on this one and its evolution through the Ages of Arda, I recommend the articles in issues number 1 and 2 of Other Minds Magazine.
