You are always welcomed to jump in, Master Arthadan!
Still for me: Master of the links ! 😎
I think I know what David is asking about. I can´t remember either. But I have a look at my screenshots and found this:[imgz url=http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/32_map_first_age_of_arda.gif]http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/thumbs/32_map_first_age_of_arda.gif[/imgz]
If I remember right, Gavin could help here. Or our Elf!
PS: David, if you need some of these pics, don´t hesitate to drop me a line . . .
December 19, 2010 at 10:27 am #14087Can I drop a line also Master Turambar? I do not have any of these nices maps…
December 19, 2010 at 10:53 am #14088Just sent it to you Master Forest Warden.
December 19, 2010 at 11:57 am #14091December 19, 2010 at 12:34 pm #14093Nice links Arthadan. I think the second one is too close to our own earth evolution…
December 19, 2010 at 1:23 pm #14097Considering which maps to fit the scene one should keep in mind what the second meeting of the White Council (T.A. 2851) was about. I think it doesn’t make much sense that a “global map” was of any interest, as the core of the discussion was focused on a certain region.
I think that the two larger opened scrolls on the table have to be maps. The third, small one, could be a map, too, maybe showing details of a fortress. I don’t think that the Istari were in need of written documents then. Though in the MV360 we have a globe and 3 books at Saruman’s place.
These are just my ideas.December 19, 2010 at 9:35 pm #14108I think all of us could choose one different map to draw it or paint it on MB560… there is enough maps for everybody and our imagination could choose what ever we want in whole Middle earth…
December 19, 2010 at 9:41 pm #14109Mapping is always a topic I’m willing to jump onto
The Fonstad atlas is excellent – especially where the Northwest is considered. For the – more or less vague – remainder of the continent, it has certain weaknesses 8without wanting to lessen her work!). Not only for the scarcity of original information, but also for conclusions on that. The good point to acknowledge is that she was aware of more recent evidence and thus significantly altered her world map between the 1st and 2nd editions of her work.
A good example of an academic approach: The state of the Tolkien lore is evolving and not static. For this insight alone she deserves high merits. I’m sure that she would have considered updating the atlas even a second time – so sad she passed away so earlyEspecially the article in Other Minds 2 (and to a lesser extent the one in OM1) deals with the original evidence of the world design, plus the merits (and weaknesses) of Karen Fonstad’s approach.
A great problem (obviously) is the unfinished state of world design that Tolkien left us. But as already mentioned: For everyone interested in Tolkien world mapping, the two articles in OM1 and 2 are highly recommended
Cheers
TolwenDecember 19, 2010 at 11:28 pm #14110Thank you all for the responses to the map question and the sample maps, sorry I haven’t responded earlier, sadly our dog has to have a major operation tomorrow to remove a tumour so being online and painting hasn’t been a priority as the day draws near, but back to topic, all will (hopefully) be revealed come the finished peice.
Interestingly enough I also found a nice map at the front of the Tolkien Bestiary which looks quite good (Numenor is not the correct shape, but the book was probably produced before actual maps of Numenor were published) and may also suit my purposes.
Anyhow, now to study the images that have been posted.
David
December 27, 2010 at 9:25 pm #14186So guys “The White council” is in the drawer, the colors are purchased… and from tomorrow I’m ready to new adventure….
December 31, 2010 at 10:35 am #14242The White council woke me up this morning ! What a beauty-full piece off art !
I am not sure I will be capable to paint it in time though…December 31, 2010 at 11:24 am #14245It is, isn´t it !!!!!
So- you should hurry up, Milo! You will recognize lots of details while painting those figures . . .January 2, 2011 at 4:31 pm #14278Well, after 3 weeks of late delivery, I feel the constest is over for me unless Mithril can delay the deadline.
Painting MB560 in 2 next weeks without any week-end free is impossible…January 2, 2011 at 11:50 pm #14286So there is Master Thingol and myself left . . . ? Can´t believe that.
Who are the others hiding in the mists . . .January 3, 2011 at 9:32 am #14297I started some undercoating yesterday evening, still, I do not want to haste and waste good painting just for a contest.
I will contact Michael to request some delay.January 3, 2011 at 10:33 am #14305I´m seriously thinking to make me a Mithril Christmas present, and I´m between The unexpected party and the White council. If there will be a prolonged deadline for the contest, may I could have my council painted.
But it´s a remote opcion (I haven´t ordered it yet)
Anyway, I´ll love to see your works on that wonderful piece
