wow, top class! could you give a few tips or instructions on how to achieve this result? mine never turn out so clean (i use acetone and a tooth brush).
June 6, 2011 at 6:52 pm #17835De rien, monsieur! I’m glad to help, it was the least I could do.
Master Cameosis, I use a tooth brush and universal solvent I buy in the painture shop (it’s toluene, so it’s toxic, you have to wear gloves and handle it in open air if possible). I let the miniature inside the liquid for a couple of days before brushing and then repeat the process if neccesary. The the final step is a gentle sanding with steel wool (this is a special material also use to polish floors, but softer).
June 6, 2011 at 9:47 pm #17845I hate stripping it off. So I am still for the look of an alternative way. Maybe your method Master Arthadan could be THE method . . .
Try to get this Toluene . . .June 7, 2011 at 11:35 am #17846actually I do the same as Arthadan using indistruial toluene solvent from brand V33 (not used for years actually I hope it is still active in its bottle :p ) but it is not liquid it is a “jelly” (“gel” in french, if you see what I mean) in order not to get intoxicated, and since the bottle aperture is big, i use some thin metal cord around the figurine and put the figurine entirely in the bottle while having the metal cord fixed outside…. I leave the figurine for some hours in it then i retrieve it… usually the paint has begun to peel out of the figurine and you can simply peel it with small tools and it all goes away and reveals bare metal below, no matter how many layers of paintings there was…
the more you keep it in the bottle the more it will allow for peeling in small details and deep parts easily, indeed…
quite magic
June 7, 2011 at 3:47 pm #17847I use Acetone + old tooth brush, 95% of paint goes off.
For my vintage miniatures, I lately added several very diluted grey layers. Doing so, I reach almost original primer look.June 7, 2011 at 3:58 pm #17848I’ll have to look up what the stuff I always use is called –
June 7, 2011 at 5:01 pm #17849acetone requires quite a lot of work and you spread the paint all on the figurine until it wears out… nothing compared to a complete peel out of the vynilic paint which leaves the figurine totally paint free chemically
June 7, 2011 at 7:18 pm #17850Well, recently I’ve started to used braked fluid, and it works nice good to take most of the paint, leaving in the minis some hours. Later I finish cleaning it with an old brush and tolueno or acetone.
June 7, 2011 at 10:18 pm #17855I have tried aceton as well, but didn´t come to a really sophisticated result.
That´s the reason why my ears are wide open.
The “Tolueno” Arthadan and Gildor mentioned will be on my workbench sooner as everybody might guess . . .June 7, 2011 at 11:09 pm #17858here is a french link to the product I use… I could not find the chemical properties but it clearly says it can strip up to 10 layouts of anykind of paints from any many kinds of support including metal , wood
it is VERY VERY strong and effective and does not attack the metal you just peel away altogether the paint in a single peeling… like you would remove the crust on a roasted piece of chickeneasily
http://www.v33.fr/gallery_files/site/44/48/49/15460.pdfJune 8, 2011 at 6:02 am #17859gildor, how do you handle it — with gloves? do you just leave the figure out to dry and how do you clean / rinse the miniature? if i gathered correctly, it must not enter the hydrologic cycle (so one must not wash it in the sink).
in germany, there are loads of restrictions regarding sale, because it is highly toxic and dangerous.
german link (99,5% pure toluene / toluol):
http://www.aurelio-online.com/Toluol-analysenrein-C7H8-mind-995-1-Liter-in-BraunglasflascheJune 8, 2011 at 8:26 am #17862as I said, i surround the figurine with some thin brass wire, i make a little noose, and i plunge the figurine in the bootle opening inside the “gel”, while i still have the thin other side of the brass wire outside… after several hours, I remove the figurine by pulling the wire.
Indeed the figurine is a bit gelified
but using some absorbing paper (no sink, but then I throw it in the trashcan but there is not a lot of product inside) I remove most of it then I carreful peel the paint that has not already gone with the absorbing paper helped with a thin modelling scalpel to reach the difficult parts. what remains of the paint is removed with the gel so in the end , there is not a lot of this product left quite nothing actually and you can rinse it or use some slighty wet kerchief to make sure no product is left and the figurine is clean
VERY scarcely I have problems with very difficult angles and edges but it only requires some more hours in the “gel” and even that is then easily removed…
As I said, I don’t know the real composition of this product and I suppose it is somehow kept secret by the brand because it is REALLY efficient and there are not a lot of competitors on this quality…
maybe it could be toluene free? from the forums I checked, V33 gel is less toxic and different from toluene, and its not especially dangerous for skin.June 8, 2011 at 3:04 pm #17863thanks, it sounds really good in any case.
June 9, 2011 at 2:47 pm #17868That´s the truth!
June 15, 2011 at 7:38 am #17975Well, today has been a hard work day in the post office. Received the two Trolls from Arthadan (all fantastic, thanks a lot)
So this afternoon I’ll sent Milo his mini with the vallejo paints I have collected for him (Milo, I’ll send you a PM with total cost ASAP).
I’ve also recieved the MX Burzash (thanks a lot Jason), and have won Smaug Triumphant in Ebay, so I’ve finally got all the Mithril Dragons.
Updating want list and re-starting minis hunt!
June 15, 2011 at 7:44 am #17977Great news for collectors on both sides of the Pyrénées then ! 😆
You are great and deserve a free drink in the pony Chema !
Of course, Master Arthadan is the first person to thank more for having found, purchased and provided this miniatures.
BTW, I also won 2 dragon auction & M322 from same seller.
Now Smaug Triumphant is my last dragon missing ! 😆 -
