You might also all be interested to know that the The New Zealand Herald has announced that the first official cinematic trailer for The Hobbit is due to be released tomorrow (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. – presumably that’s NZ time. It will be put up on Peter Jackson’s Facebook website.

Just a couple of scenes I don’t instantly recognise, but the spirit of the tale is all there. I shall now be continuously excited until a year hence. Brilliant stuff!

I saw it…. I saw it…. once whan all 5 movies become available in extended editions for rent directly from my big Tolkien drawer, I will made one day only for watching them… my precious movie collection on TV with picture in HD definition…

I’ll close as North Korea, and cry when I finish this cinematic journey …

problem is.. thorin clearly does not look like a dwarf at all…. and most dwarves in general are more caricatural than I can imagine… I can understand about cultures, but somes are so parodic that it tends on the ridiculous…

another point my wife and I regret…. the film will ONLY be in 3D, and for some people, 3D is not possible as it gives headaches or worse and my wife is among them…. a pity there is no 2D alternative…

and to conclude… what’s all this between Galadriel and Gandalf??? in the teaser it ALMOST looks as if it was some kind of romance or close brotherhood….

I know that Lady Galadriel DID know Olorin (later Gandalf) when they both were in the gardens of Lorien in Valinor before the theft of the Silmarils…. but still…..

I like these trailers. All fans of Tolkien began to hold opinions without stopping ….:lol:

I like the trailer very much, especially Bilbo. And I agree Thorin looks noble, strong, tall…human.
Regarding 3D, wait 6more monthes and get the DVD in 2D

Of all the things I can see, what I liked most is the music of Master Howard Shore. Once again, excellent!

I agree with the Lord of the Paints, that different Dwarf cultures are represented well. As for Thorin, he does look a bit mannish. But I will wait for the movie to judge.

All that JRRT tells us about the appearance of his Dwarves is that they’re slightly bigger (or bulkier) than Hobbits and they have beards. So what’s the problem in them looking like short men? – But of course, Master Gildor is an Elf, and Elves are by nature incapable of saying anything nice about Dwarves….

it’s not about the height, not at all!!

it’s about the WIDTH…. thorin is clearly TOO slim, and PJ hobbits too are a bit slim, they are supposed to all be a bit “fat’ (by lack of the correct word in english, if you see what I mean)… I can’t imagine a SLIM hobbit or halfeling. Actually Sam would be fitting, and also Merry, but Frodo and Pippin are too “slim”… and thus Thorin too is too “slim” in his face… I can’t imagine Thorin being SOOOO young and so slim of face, compared to his fellow dwarves, especially Balin…

definitly it’s not a height problem…

I’m certainly not going to let it disturb my enjoyment of the project. Fat Dwarves, thin Dwarves—it dooesn’t worry me at all. If they were tall Dwarves, beardless Dwarves, or had Elvish ears, that would bother me, but I’m not going to worry about whether or not they’ve been on a diet. On of Tolkien’s lost early drafts of “The Hobbit” actually mentions that Thorin’s company had recently been on a Weight-Watchers’ diet plan, which is why they were so greedy when they arrived at Bag End.

there is a difference between looking famished, and being naturally slim and well fitting…

they arrive at Bag End in full battle gear… in the books they are simple dwarves with colorful cloth hoods and no fighting expertise…. here they look like a band of veteran mercenaries…

oh and by the way… you mean several races of dwarves…. ok… but Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Oin, Gloin… and Dain II are all cousins and they ARE from Durin’s line (all descended from King Nain II) …and Kili and Fili are direct nephews of Thorin… Indeed Kili and Fili looks like they are from Thorin Family, but Balin and Dwalin are brothers (not really look like brothers to me…) , Gloin and Oin are brothers too but these are almost ok…

can you imagine Balin and Thorin of the same family and most of all, the same generation?

Balin was born on Third Age 2763 in Erebor, and he is direct cousin of Thorin… who’s born, on Erebor too in Third Age 2746

Thorin is OLDER than Balin there is no purest lineage from Thorin than there is for Balin, except that the parents of Thorin were kings under the mountain because Thorin great grandfather Dain I was the firstborn of king Nain II and Borin (great grandfather of Balin) was second born…

Much time has passed since we noted that all these dwarfs does not resemble to those described in the book … This is a modern view of Tolkien’s dwarves… has nothing to do with race, even with the tribe or with Asterix….

Rhuoommm … well, there’s a discussion once again … rguoommm … about Dwarves …
I’ll not take part in that, as I’m still waiting for more pics from that forest, which is a place in that “Hobbit-booky-thing”. I’m more interested in that, as you can imagine. Nice dark forest with some strange Elves living there.

I don’t think the Dwarves are armoured – but rather wearing travelling gear and “work” clothes.

Thorin’s wearing his full harness, cos he’s Thorn goddamn Oakenshield and goddamn King of the Dwarves, damnit. Forgive the silliness, but its quite apt. Remember that whole thing in the Quest for the Holy Grail – “how do you know he’s king?”

Well the correct answer would usually be – bloke with a crown on his head and an expensive suit of armour, and a bunch of thuggy guys with him.

In other words, a nice piece of visual storytelling – Thorin dressed as a Dwarven king, surrounded by artisans. Explains his bad attitude. (He, in truth, was a smith himself. So in a way he’s playing at being king.)

Never mind the Elf – he just likes moaning! I’m sure he’ll enjoy the movie when he sees it.

Alas, nothing in this world is perfect, Master Gildor, so why let it bother you? Compromise will always be needed when things we love are seen or interpreted differently by other people. We just have to sigh manfully (or Elffully) and put up with it if it bothers us. Truth be told, most of the audience won’t give a rat’s backside (which reminds me, I must open a new keg of scrumpy) whether the characters are the right comparative ages, or are supposed to be wearing hoods – the majority of them won’t even have read the book. Some won’t even know it is a book. The most important thing is for the production to capture the spirit of Middle-earth, and I personally have no fears on that score.
