July 18, 2011 at 10:26 pm #18648It’s definatedly not “hobbitish” at all (as in “The Hobbit” not as “dwarves-looking-like-hobbits). I really don’t like it
July 19, 2011 at 7:40 am #18651I agree with you Lady Wirilómë, these are no J.R.R.T dwarves…
For instance Thorin…I don’t like him at all
July 19, 2011 at 9:04 am #18652Well, I wouldn´ t say in general, that i don´t like ALL dwarves.
Painting small metal miniatures helped me to have a certain look at certain details. Necessary for painting small miniatures . . .
Doing so you can see some dwarven characters which are a bit “strange” in their design part.
Others are pretty much well done. Even if Del Toro´s characteristical influence polarizes.Put your eye on Oin and Gloin for example. They look really fantastic.
Let´s wait until we see all of them in action . . .
July 19, 2011 at 9:26 am #18653Thorin (most important character in Tolkien’s world), then Kili & Fili, (despite being youngsters) all look human…
This is non sense
Other are quite nice and I agree also Oin and Gloin look great.
As you say, we shall wait and see once in move but I currently feel unconfortable…
July 19, 2011 at 12:55 pm #18655I must say that Fili and Kili .. and Thorrin, all look very odd, I’d even say too elvish to be dwarves…. even if they have beards…
and Bifur with his sort of metal part in his forehead is odd too
July 19, 2011 at 1:18 pm #18656To many odd dwarves are here… for one I’m sure. Master Turambar is right ! Only Oin and Gloin looks like dwarves shown in The LotR movies. All others might be better when we see them on film… !
July 19, 2011 at 2:43 pm #18662More like a freak show….
July 19, 2011 at 3:04 pm #18664Mithrill will have a hard time releasing Hobbit related figurines alongside the Movie “fashion” effect… if the movie characters are that alienated from the books….
but most of all… Games Workshop, will also have difficulties with that…. because they already released them I suppose and most of all the Necromancer figurine… (which makes an appearance at least in voice in the Hobbit movies)

:D:D
July 21, 2011 at 8:47 am #18718Definitely, unless last minute changes, these will be the “faces” of the dwarves….
July 21, 2011 at 8:57 am #18719This has a lot more similarities with the world of JRR Tolkien…
:D:D:D
………. much better than the dwarves advertising photography sessions….. Now I feel better …in a short while….
July 21, 2011 at 9:17 am #18720You’re right what you say, Estel. The work must be analyzed at the end, even among friends is always interesting comment on the step by step…..
Another thing, I remember that all the Hobbit´s dwarves were of Durin’s House and they were from the Ered Luin, in Eriador, where found refuge the wandering dwarves of this House …..
July 21, 2011 at 10:29 am #18721As I told before: let´s see them in action . . .
A short but very welcomed visit by Estele! That means: he is still around.
July 21, 2011 at 11:23 am #18722Wow. I feel much better naow that I saw a bit of the unexpected party !
The final result will be pure magic again.
:D:D
July 21, 2011 at 12:23 pm #18726I have to correct you Estel… there are indeed 7 dwarves families…. but ALL of the Thorin & Co. are from the Durin’s House. almost all of them being cousins actually.
that does not mean there could not have been mix in the house but almost all of them are relative to Durin VI himself and so that makes them “truebloods” toward Durin’s House.
the Other houses did not dwell in Khazad Dum but in Belegost, Nogrod or other dwellings in the east… the only dwarves I know about who were not from Durin’s house were Telcar, Gamil Zirak, and Mim, Kim and Ibun….
But in the end I agree, the dwarves look better in the movie than on pictures… Still, they should not taken apart in terms of culture, they all come from dwellings in the blue mountains and from the same clan.
July 21, 2011 at 1:03 pm #18727I just watched the end of the movie lol
explaining why PJ was at Pinewood studios
… Christopher Lee could not move to NZ yet, so PJ came to him in england so the he can appear in this production sequence, and in costume
nice to have him aboard

Well, well a lore discussion. I have to jump in!
As you have noted, the Blue Mountains where the awakening place of two Dwarven Tribes (the Broadbeams and the Firebeards), while the First Tribe (the Longbeards, Dúrin’s) was Mount Gundabad in the Misty Mountains. So, if Thorin’s companions came from the Blue Mountains there is a good chance that some of them belonged to the other two Tribes. Let’s take a closer look:
– Thorin II: Longbeard for sure, related to Durin himself.
-Glóin, Dori, Ori, Nori, brothers Balin & Dwalin, brothers Kíli and Fíli, Óin: Longbeards.– Bifur, Bofur and Bombur:
Quote:Of the other companions of Thorin Oakenshield in the journey to Erebor Ori, Nori, and Dori were also of the House of Durin, and more remote kinsmen of Thorin: Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur were descended from Dwarves of Moria but were not of Durin’s line.-Lord of the Rings Appendix-
Assuming the three are related, I think they would belong to the Broadbeams (Bombur at the very least!). Anyway, Longbeards were quite scattered, from the Iron Hills to the Blue Mountains (and maybe there were some left in the Grey Mountains), so it makes sense than each community has developped some characteriscal aspect (and more so each individual).
July 21, 2011 at 9:04 pm #18736not of durin’s line does not mean not of durin’s house but not from his direct family… indeed you could be right too but no one will know….
