Ah yes, the sun is past the yardarm, as we say here (though I don’t know why, because Bree is hundreds of miles from the sea…), so it’s time for a long, cool, amber-coloured drink. I’ll join you.
January 25, 2013 at 12:16 pm #26874Cheers !
January 25, 2013 at 3:16 pm #26878huuuuooommm … me too … of course
January 28, 2013 at 12:56 pm #26885Alas, a tragic day! This morning I dropped my M16 on the table, from a height of only three inches …. and the legs snapped off at the ankles.
I may have just invented several entirely new swear-words.
I’ve glued her together again, and the join doesn’t really show, but I know the fracture is there, and that’s bad enough. I’ll never be able to afford another (even this one was a gift some years ago from a very generous patron), so I shall just have to make do. At least this way I won’t feel guilty about painting her, and that should entirely conceal the break.
January 28, 2013 at 1:38 pm #26886Very bad event for you indeed…
January 28, 2013 at 4:24 pm #26887Huuoommm … that’s really bad news, Master Barliman … huoommm … so your idea of painting the figure now maybe is a good one … rhuoommm
January 28, 2013 at 5:29 pm #26888Master Barliman, it’s a bad news , but can also be a unique opportunity to paint this figurine collector 😉
You must see the good side of thingsJanuary 28, 2013 at 6:09 pm #26889… potential damage calculated in the hundreds of euros…. When it happens to me something like, I hate the world around me. At least half an hour…. 😮
January 28, 2013 at 7:20 pm #26890Needless to say, it wasn’t the value that worried me.
Of course, one result of my misfortune is that the value of the surviving, perfect, M16s has just increased a little bit more!

, Ouch!!!
January 29, 2013 at 8:39 am #26894Master Barliman, Yesterday I received my 5 Tengwar, I’ve read that if the M16 was so rare is because it always broke at the knees during manufacture. This is not really your fault, but rather a fragility of the figurine
January 29, 2013 at 8:51 am #26895This is true, Mistress Sevlag. Her weak ankles are the reason why so few remain available today, and why so few were cast in the first place.
January 29, 2013 at 1:58 pm #26896The problem is not the legs of the figure, the problem is the metal the figures are cast with! The same with the old horses when you cut of the supports for the legs. During time the thin legs couldn’t support the weight of the body and started bending / breaking. If you cast any of these figures with a better metal nothing of this will happen.
January 29, 2013 at 2:16 pm #26897Not all old Mithrils break at the ankles, of course – so the weakness in the case of M16 results from the very deep “incisions” between the folds of her leggings, whence the fragile legs. But I agree that the metal of the old figures was of a pretty low quality, and it has decayed further with age.
January 29, 2013 at 2:46 pm #26898Still comes back to the metal….. her cast in jewlery alloy with a balrog on top and the ankels will not give in!
January 29, 2013 at 3:21 pm #26900Huooommm … as far as an old Tree dares to judge upon such matters, both of you are right … huoommm … but, I can only agree with what Master Barliman said about the “old horses” … huorhuuûom … it was a bit more than just annoying when I found out about that (after I cut off the supports) …. rhuûomm … it meant hard work to give them back at least some stability …rhuoommhûom …
but what surprised me was to learn, that the old M16 Lady broke after a fall from such a short height … rhuoommm … so I better take care when next time I dust that glass-showcase … huom … that old lady seems to be a bit vulnerable … huoomm …
I better do not try to find out if mine is of a better quality …. rhuooommmm ….January 29, 2013 at 3:21 pm #26901That’s what I said – it comes down to the metal; but since not all Mithrils break at ther ankles, the “design” of this particular figure’s legs is its Achilles heel (almost literally…).
January 29, 2013 at 3:24 pm #26902huom … sorry … I forgot to express my joy about the fact that our dear Master Hsf62 is around here when his knowledge and explanations are needed … huoommm … cheers, Master Hsf62 …

It was the last thing I was expecting. Having seen inside the “break”, the metal had a distinctly brittle, “aerated” look to it, a bit like cheap tin looks when it snaps.
January 29, 2013 at 5:09 pm #26904She would not rather made of glass or crystal this precious figurine ?
