Huoommm …. just for a thought, Master Barliman … err … you know that I was always present in these premises, even cared about them while you were absent this year … huoomm … and as you can see in all those entries, I managed it well. meseems … rhuom … no one came or even complained, as no one was here to complain, except those regulars, who never complain … rhuomm ..
Ahem … errrrr … rhuom … what matters is … so to say, … alas … you’re planning that Christmas-thing again … alas …
is it me, the tree again, standing decorated in the corner in the tabroom … rhuommm … being quiet for a week? … huom…
Ahh, I’m hanging about some Christmas Riddles of the past … huoommm … even watched TV lately several times …. rhuomm … so, who wrote “The Lord of the Rings” ?
—> hey, no google being allowed with this, please, no telephone calls, emails or SMSs admitted …
right, Master Talkqueen it was … very good indeed.
So there’s one point for me, as you passed your time thinking. – I simply won, because I knew the correct answer.
Like to keep on ? … rhuoomm…huom?December 10, 2011 at 2:46 pm #22124Yes, why not. But ask a question which you can’t answer! Otherwise it smacks of cheating.
And yes, it’s the corner for you again. But I’ll put a little less tinsel on you this year, if you’re good. And I’m thinking about the decorations being a little more traditional – by putting candles on your branches… er, arms – though you’ll have to make sure you don’t move too much, or you might singe those of your parts that should never see the light.
December 10, 2011 at 3:04 pm #22125I have an easy riddle for master Archer:
He left her standing alone upon the ‘hill of spies’.
Who are they, where ?December 10, 2011 at 5:33 pm #22126Huoommm … shouldn’t mention the Silmarillon here, Master Milo …. gruomm … or is this thread not being read by spies …
anyway, it’s a non- conversion done for a diorama …. rhuoommm … I thinkDecember 10, 2011 at 6:03 pm #22127huoommm … Master Barliman, I wasn’t cheating when I answered my first question correctly myself … rhuoomm … so let me try better … err … say …
– how many different bases are there for those 10 Elronds ?
– in which figures there are no book-signs sculpted? – correct order, please.
– two different ideas were passed on with the two banners Elrond is holding in Chris’ figures … what does each mean?
(Ahem, I do know well, whom I’m addressing, Master Barliman. So it’s no use to look up in Master Stephen Slater’s book of Heraldry)alright, these 6 points go with me again, as I had the right answers.
December 10, 2011 at 6:06 pm #22128huoommm … sorry, but this is not only a matter of the Tree and the Barkeep … rhuomm … enjoy and take part, please, or let it just pass by … .huooommtidommm

December 11, 2011 at 5:05 pm #22140[a tall tree enters] … huomm …
I hope someone around here can help me … huom … well, last night I had a serious discussion with my dear Ent-wife about Elves … rhuoomm … I do remember well, that Master Tolkien somewhere stated that Elves do not like or wear gold, as they prefer silver … huoomm … so I always avoided to use gold whenever I painted those tiny Mithril-Elves … different shades of silver were fine for me … gggrruoom … then my dear Ent-wife was able to quote from Master Tolkien’s writings that some of the Elves also valued gold being used for some jewellery … rhuoom … unfortunately I couldn’t prove my statement about Elves avoiding gold as it is less valuable than silver … huom … I know that I’m right, but cannot prove …. alas, or might even have to repaint a lot of figures … so what? … does anybody really know about this? ….December 11, 2011 at 5:16 pm #22141I confess, Master Tree, that I have no idea – I’ve read just about everything JRRT ever wrote, but I don’t recall any reference to Elves not wearing gold – however, that proves nothing (memory like a lumber-room, remember), so I may have read it and then just filed it away in some backroom of my brain where it will probably never see the light of day again. If you do remember where you came across this interesting tidbit of information, however, I’d be very interested to know where.
By the way, you look very tall this evening.
December 11, 2011 at 5:42 pm #22143huoommm … thank you very much for considering my rquest seriously, Master Barliman … huommm … when I find the source, I’ll let you know, of course … but it must be somewhere in the books, or I wouldn’t have taken that note about 15 years ago … gruommm …. and in the ent, wives always are right, meseems … huom … got used to it, somehow …. by now … err, bye now.
December 11, 2011 at 6:19 pm #22146I do recall reading something about gold being tainted by Melkor, so that may be a reason elves would avoid it.
December 11, 2011 at 8:13 pm #22147shadyt wrote:I do recall reading something about gold being tainted by Melkor, so that may be a reason elves would avoid it.I recall a few tidbits in the customs of the Eldar. It is in the HoME10. The short version is as follows (my interpretation in red:
– On their betrothal, the Eldar exchanged silver rings
– On their wedding, the silver rings are removed, melted down and the metal never again used for betrothals. Afterwards, golden rings are exchanged upon marriage and worn on the index finger of the right hand
– All matter of Middle-earth is tainted to some degree by Melkor’s disseminated power that he let go into the world (in a similar process as Sauron did with the Rings; and especially the One). Some materials however, did get more of Melkor’s attention and were therefore stronger tainted than others. Here gold is held to be more affected than silver [and thus more liable to corruption or causing corruption to come quicker when dealing or desiring it].Best
TolwenDecember 18, 2011 at 6:35 pm #22187Mmmmh, nobody around here FOR DAYS ! What do you think is the problem, Master Barliman?
Maybe it is that you DO NOT offer these typical Christmas dainties and all the fellows have to spent their time elsewhere . . .Let´s open the “Christmas Bakery” over there. I need some assasins . . . ahem . . . assistants
December 18, 2011 at 6:54 pm #22190Christmas? Is that something to do with the midwinter festival? – Yule and all that? Well, I’ve put some extra-large logs on the fire and arranged for the smiling fat man with a white beard to come round in a week’s time. What else should I do?
