Though the idea would be original… there are copyright problem and licences problem… we are, alas in the real world…
When the man sends me (or any of us ) in private, some pictures of “greens” or his workbench or any of his work in progess, he usually mentions clearly “please keep it for yourself” do not spread the info (and/or picture) to anybody… Promising to keep silent and keeping this promise is the base of a trust relationship and friendship in most cases….Now why would the man want his “works in progress not to be unveiled”… there are several answers :
– licence problems (when it comes to figurines CLEARLY representing a Tolkien character) to release info and images on a “yet to be approved” sold-to-be material… (legal aspect)
– copyright and intellectual property of Chris Tubb artwork… Though I doubt we, serious and sympathetic folks would want to spoil anything, if the news of “work in progress” of material non disclosed by Mithril were to be known on the internet, well, I doubt we would use the design, the art the pose whatever is displayed to be used to release other materiel PRIOR to mithril release… that would be ‘industrial espionnage” … (as I said I doubt we would do that… but the rest of the internet would eventually be informed and register on this MMP forum to have access to these picture, try to reproduce it the best they can… and release it with other “names” not needing Tolkien Enterprise licence and thus released sooner…all in all… It is too risky to display things before the “copyright&licence” are attributed to the figurine…. Since Chris Tubb seems quite upset about piracy lately, I think this would not be a good idea at all… Unless I could prove him I can build a completly safe “virtual space” on this website that NO one can reach without having been specificaly given exclusive access by me (after Chris acceptance) … I don’t mean a login/password but something stronger even… (stronger than the access to the GF forums)…. Some among us may remember that some time ago we were attacked by a “band of orcs” and though I raised the great “warding shields of the Valar” against them, we can’t assume Morgoth does not have intrusion force from beyond the doors of Arda ready to reach in from the Void…
as you can see, though this would be marvellous to have such images… there are “dark side aspects” of this… We must remember that Mithril is an enterprise linked to a very very “closed” licenced world (tolkien) unlike many other brands who do not have to licence their material before selling them…
there are less than 15 enterprises in the world to have a “permanent licence” with TE… and it is very very hard to get it… and VERY easy to loose it…January 18, 2010 at 9:15 pm #8641And what about showing some miniatures of an upcoming release after they have been approved and are going to be released for sure? Something like a preview one or two weeks before they official anounce in Mithril’s website to rise interest… and begin to save cash
January 18, 2010 at 10:08 pm #8647well as far as I know, Mithril themselves put them online once they get the approval themselves
(well in the newsletter at least)
but indeed if not everybody has access to the newsletter, we could, I think, copy the GF pictures extracted from the newsletterJanuary 20, 2010 at 10:51 am #8653If the newsletter is exclusive for the Mithril Fellowship members, then I have no access to it. I’d be interested in take a look to the upcoming miniatures which may appear there, if possible.
January 20, 2010 at 11:25 am #8654If I am informed the right way, Master Arthadan, there is the current newsletter posted on the mithril side as well.
Otherwise be sure, that new pics of new releases will be posted here on MMP immediately !!!!
But- it is not wrong being part of the fellowship . . . and it´s never too late joining the fellowshipJanuary 20, 2010 at 2:53 pm #8655You’re right, Master Rita. The newsletter is not for Fellowship members only. I’ll subscribe now!
About the Fellowship, I was member of the original one, back in the day and I have all the old releases excepting the 54mm Galadriel. Now I’m not fond of the new pricey limited editions approach and I miss the Tengwar magazine, so I rather stick to the M series.
January 20, 2010 at 5:02 pm #8656As it was the same for me, Master Arthadan. The old fellowship- what a time.
I am called a new member since last year, as it was an offer . . .January 20, 2010 at 5:09 pm #8657mmmh, those Tengwars will be offered on German ebay often. If you are interested, don´ t hesitate to tell me . . .
January 20, 2010 at 5:22 pm #8658I believe I have a spare set.
January 20, 2010 at 7:15 pm #8660Shame that there’s not an equivalent magazine now. But times have changed.
Incidentally, what’s with this bonkers Mithril sale? I say bonkers, because if they’re trying to shift stock this isn’t the way to do it. There are plenty of figures there that I’d LOVE to buy quantities of at reduced prices, but the way they’ve been grouped means that I’d have to also buy loads of figures that I DON’T want in order to get them – ergo, the prices for the ones that I DO want would end up being too high to justify the purchase!!! Why not just offer the figures individually at sale prices, and let people select the ones that they actually want?
January 20, 2010 at 7:27 pm #8663I agree with you.. those bonkers sale as you say is probably concentrated on attracting new customers. Probably younger generation of potential Mithril kids… I also want to buy some of them but not this time… I have use 20% fellowship discount for completion of my collection… which is also announced until 28.01….. it will be more discounts through the year…. for sure…
January 20, 2010 at 7:49 pm #8667I would love to see the ‘Greens’ showing how Chris crafts his trade – Tom Meir (Thunderbolt Mountain) often posts images of his Greens which show off the skill of the sculptor AND in some cases interesting ‘how they did it’ techniques (this is what prompted me to grab some of his Orcs and a few other bits).
But I agree with the points about not wanting to muddy the waters for Mithril re license issues or for someone to inadvertently break a trust that Chris has placed by allowing a preview. Tom Meir I guess has a bit more freedom in this respect as the orcs and elves are his design concept whereas Mithril are under license.
All said and done, far better to suddenly have some new images spring up of completed and TE approved miniatures than have to ‘stew’ over miniatures that have been started but may never see the light of day for whatever reason.
Rita.de, try and sleep and do not lay awake thinking about Easterlings – we need you to chanel your energies into more masterpieces
I tend to agree with the comments about the sale – why not let folk choose what they want so that the offer is more attractive and more stock shifts (which is what MM must be after), or is it that some of the stuff wouldn’t shift if it hadn’t been offered this way? I haven’t really looked closely at the figures in the sale I have to admit – trying to save my pennies for something special that’s on its way;)
January 21, 2010 at 6:57 am #8668Some quote of the new Mithril newsletter to discuss, I think:
“We have sent a set of the MX release to our painter Joe Fahey to paint a example, he has excellent knowledge of The Hobbit and will paint a perfect set to show just how detailed the release is.”
I am not sure, if Mr Fahey is the right painter to do the job. Yes, I mean that. If you have a look at the painting qualities of some Mithril maniacs or painters in general, the painted examples of Mithril cannot withstand many of them. The painting community has changed and has grown up from the 80ies.
What do you think? Am I hypercritical in my thoughts?
AND CHEERS!!!
January 21, 2010 at 7:28 am #8669No, I agree with you – the quality of the fans’ work is way superior.
January 21, 2010 at 8:13 am #8670I agree about the bonkers Mithril sale. You go to their website and you find the current sale, then you go to evilbay (a.k.a. e-bay, but it’s evil because it makes me spend way too much!
) and you find they are offering reduced prices at the same time for yet another collections… so if you order from both places, you’ll end paying shipping costs twice! Or waiting for next month’s promotion… to pay shipping cost again 😡
Just a plain “10% discount for every 10 figures purchased up to 25% in all M and Classic references” would make happy most of us.
January 21, 2010 at 8:50 am #8672No, Master Estel, you are not hypercritical. Let´s see how “excelent” Master Fahey´s knowledge of the Hobbit is . . .
January 21, 2010 at 1:10 pm #8678I hope his painting work will appropriate present this beautiful master piece…
January 21, 2010 at 2:08 pm #8679the problem is…. no matter how good or bad mister Flahey’s painting is… he is an employee/in contract with Mithril and thus they have to make him paint the figurine.
No doubt this painting will be necessary to be used as artcover for the box the MX UP will be packaged into… Indeed with better painting, the final product would sell better but what’s the matter after all since this masterpiece will never appear in any shops or any advertisement outside mithril.ie and the low casting number combined with its notoriety will also certainly make it “sold out” very very fast.
January 21, 2010 at 2:49 pm #8680. . .and this is the part, where Mr. Dritz enters the stage . . .
January 21, 2010 at 3:06 pm #8683I think there is also a “time” problem.
For example, if Mistress Wendy gets the job painting the UP ( being “slowest painter ever”) there will be a massiv
problem for a publication in time . . .
( I hope there will be enough smilies for Mistress Wendy not killing me . . . ) -
