about orcs…. the very first orcs I painted, from Mithril range (since I never painted anything else)… were the nude morgoth orcs of turin series… it was 15years ago… according to me, orcs are not “goblins” but rather dark and shadowy evil creatures so I chose a gray… since then i have always painted them in gray but the main reason i don’t like painting orcs is because I try to “stick” to a color schema… for all my orcs and I have, in recent years, found a superb mixing of gray + black + green + human flesh… which makes , an odd colour which is “gray-green” mostly dark with a touch of “flesh”… a very very very hard mixing of color to recreate… (most of all if you use drybrush, washing etc..) and each times it dries up, you need to remix…. which can become exasperating very fast
January 28, 2009 at 8:06 pm #4254As it seems, that many have ‘problems’ painting Orc’s flesh:
I think there is no need, that any Orc has exactly the same skin colour- to me Orcs are chaotic creatures only kept together by brutal ways and cruel masters. That could be reflected in the orcish skin tone. For the ones, who like Orcs skin more a little “greenish” in it, try drybrushing with GW’s rotting flesh colour. It is also a good idea, to mix a small pot of colour, if you like a special tone. What I want to comment: I like it very much, that folks in here does not like the green-skinned-type of a funny creature. This is not Tolkien, Orcs are cruel, are evil and bad creatures, destroying, raping and so on and I do not want to meet an Orc in my life.
So let’s have a drink! CHEERS to you all.
And please Barliman, no green beer!!January 28, 2009 at 8:19 pm #4255The Green Orc thing apparently dates back to the Hildebrant brother’s illustrations of scenes from The Lord of the Rings. Everyone else stole from that – particularly Warhammer.
Tolkien describes the orcs as having “black” – which I interpret as being an inhuman dark grey colour, rather than a warm dark skinned human colour – though mottled is also mentioned.

January 28, 2009 at 8:40 pm #4256I tend to like very dark brown (almost black), to grey washed with black, but green – never!!!!!! I actually like the orcs from the films as well (Gothmog, well not so much) and personally felt that the light flesh tones that some of them had worked well (even if not as per JRR’s description). I’m not sure how well that would look on a Mithril figure though I guess you could see plenty of examples in GW stores.
Re that newsletter, I’m sure I didn’t get it through in the form it appears on the Mithril site, I have had some stuff through, but maybe I missed a link, but at least it answers my question about how did some people know that there was another extension to the painting comp.
And congratulation Rita.de on joining such a fine body of men (and woman) in the GF.
On a another point there was mention of the new edition sizes of 150 figures. Thinking about this it is quite a worrying thought that if only 150 figures are released and the GF by now must exceed that (I think), I hope this will not lead to situations where some members cannot get a figure because it is no longer available.
I personally cannot see a reason for producing this number – if Mithril are worried that they may not sell all of them could they not cast up the usual number but not undercoat them so that if they don’t sell they go back into the melting pot? Or is that line of thought too simple?
January 28, 2009 at 10:34 pm #4261Its probably the working cost?
Looking at the available Fellowship minis, not many seem to be sold out, so I am sure they have taken the Fellowship number and orders into consideration. Its a bit sad that only 150 seem to be sufficient. Anyway, lets enjoy the show and hope that it does not close down due to a lack of demand. I just got myself the backlog of minis from the last 6 month. Nice, though one of the Knights of Dol Amroth was mispacked – I now have to swordsmen and lack a lance. No problem, though, I will just order a replacement, the double will find its place.
January 30, 2009 at 9:16 am #4266Thanks for all the interesting observations regarding Orc flesh – they generally tally with my own thoughts, and dark grey (or variations thereon) certainly seems to be the most popular colour! – though as Dave says, the movies’ pale or discoloured flesh (and ‘blonde’ hair amongst some of the Uruk-hai!) also seems to work well in a perverse kind of way, even if it isn’t true to Tolkien’s image.
So, the Hildebrandts are responsible for green flesh, then? I never did like their pictures…
January 30, 2009 at 4:27 pm #4267Huuooommmm … but I just remembered having painted that M452 of the MERP-series II according to the painting instructions by Mithril (sic)…. huoommm … that one is called “orc animist” and clearly shows a more greenish colour of skin … hom
January 30, 2009 at 4:34 pm #4268Ireland is very green (it’s all the rain), so I’ll forgive them.
January 30, 2009 at 6:01 pm #4269Huuuoommmm … the well-wooded area I’m pleased to live in also is very green … rhuoomm … so would (not wood) you also forgive me having painted some of my orc-figures in some greenish colour? … rhuoomm … hom …hom?
January 30, 2009 at 6:13 pm #4270maybe this Orc has eaten something bad? or to much spinach?? Or a Leprachaun has cursed the Orc for having stolen his gold. Or the “photo-making machine” has had a greenish lense. Or John Fahey (if he had painted it) had a bad day. or………
😆
January 30, 2009 at 8:27 pm #4271Diverting you from this neverending story of orc-flesh-colored, I would like to put your attention of something that impend to fall into . . yes, into what ? Ähh . . .
Master Theobald, you have mentioned some days before mysterious pictures of King Brand and Ingold supposedly on the mithril homepage.
Is it possible to concrete this location?January 30, 2009 at 9:39 pm #4272They’re on the new newsletter on the Mithril website. I’m very pleased with Ingold! Brand is also very good too, but I’m inevitably biased towards my own Fellowship suggestion…
January 30, 2009 at 10:43 pm #4273Huoommm … them pics are not mysterious at all … rhuoomm … you just have to look …

I think being the freshest member of the fellowship was the right decision. I take also that kind of drink Theobald would prefer.January 31, 2009 at 7:37 am #4276Ah, so you haven’t drunk scrumpy before, then, Master Rita.de? If you had you might want to think carefully before you drank it again. In fact you only have to read Master Theobald’s last message on this page to see just how much it can addle the brain.
Come on, Master Tree – try to express yourself a little more clearly! What’s all this about 999? Isn’t that the Number of the Beast in Antipodean parts of the planet? Or do you simply mean you’re in such dire need of lubrication that it’s an emergency?
January 31, 2009 at 10:30 am #4277Huooommmrhuooommmm …. well, Master Barliman …. I was just hesitating because of the number of this post …. huommmm …. cheers
January 31, 2009 at 1:24 pm #4278A thousand posts? – wow, that’s a lot of wood. Congratulations, my garrulous friend. Have this bowl of amber nectar on me.
January 31, 2009 at 4:06 pm #4279Rhuooommm … thank you, Master Barliman …. huoomm …. but please mind that not everything I provided here was based on my garrulity … hom … anyway, it’s a rare moment to have a bowl of that youknowwhat offered for free in Bree … hmmmmmmmm
January 31, 2009 at 5:30 pm #4280I think I mentioned it before but I hope Ingold’s right arm is suffering from the camera angle which makes it look out of proportion, I can’t see CT getting the proportions wrong though.
All figures are looking good!
