Yes, they are. But does Brand look somehow, well, Victorian to anyone else, or is it just me? – He somehow reminds me of the sort of pictures of “Knights In Armour” that Gothic revivalists were drawing circa 1880. Still a nice figure, though.
January 31, 2009 at 6:48 pm #4282Rhuoommm … it’s not the proportions which are wrong … huom … it’s simply because of that close-up shot with the camera focus, I’m sure …. rhuoommhom … so you’re right, Master Ddaines … hom
as for Gothic revivalists I don’t know them, Master Barliman … rhuoommm …. I hope you didn’t want to refer to them Pre-Raphaelites … homJanuary 31, 2009 at 7:41 pm #4283I like Barli’s ale better than the scrumpy. Never did like finding rat hair in my beer. And please, Barli, don’t blame it on Nob! Remember, I sit here in a dark corner and watch many things unnoticed. I’ve seen you spike the scrumpy with all kinds of unseemly things!
January 31, 2009 at 10:06 pm #4284Then I’m surprised, relieved and grateful that you only complained about the rat hair!
And no, Master Tree. The Pre-Rapahelites were talented artists who celebrated the beauty of medieval Italian art. The Gothic revivalists were a bunch of raving loonies who thought it was a wizard idea to build railway stations so that they looked like 15th century cathedrals…
February 1, 2009 at 12:30 am #4285Huoomm … thank you, Master Barliman …. huommm … I think, what you meant about them “loonies” you referred to … rhuommm … you are right, from my point of view …hom …
for me it has become too late now to critisize architechture … rhuoommm …February 1, 2009 at 6:13 am #4286Well Master Bartender, it wasn’t a complaint as much as an observation. I won’t name the “unseemly things,” aside from the afore mentioned rat hair, as I enjoy the good things about this establishment, and wouldn’t want to besmerch your scrumpy (or establishment)! Nob! Another ale please.
February 1, 2009 at 10:41 am #4287Rhhuuooommm …. you see, Master Twrich, that’s why I prefer to drink that clear clean watery liquid in these premises …. huom … though sometimes the colour of that water surprises me … hommmm … anyway, maybe it’s because of the temperature that this fluid has become a bit fluffy …. rhuoommm …. who knows?
February 2, 2009 at 6:09 pm #4289Master Innkeeper, could someone keep the doorway clear of snow;I had to enter through the window and I fear I may have to exit by the upstairs window if there is no let up in this fell winter.Perhaps the master caster would consider sharing some of his abundance from down under.
February 2, 2009 at 10:13 pm #4290Actually, Master Regalrick, most of my customers leave via the window.
February 3, 2009 at 4:26 am #4291I am an evil horrible person.
But I am amused at the contrast between -10C here, with metre high snow banks…
and -2C and 10cm snow falls in Britain.
Mutters something about walking barefoot to school. Uphill! Both ways!
February 3, 2009 at 7:38 am #4292Very interesting indeed. The coldest winter in Germany for over 100 years and the hottest summer in Australia for over 100 years.
Who trades snow for heat??? I’m sure Melburne with up to 45 C would welcome some snow.

If you don’t, there’s a tendency to think that a light snowfall barely sufficient to cool a Hobbit’s toes is a big deal. It’s also a good excuse for trains to run late (whatever ‘trains’ are…). But then, I gather that anything is a good excuse for trains to run late. Happily we don’t have them in Bree.
February 3, 2009 at 11:58 am #4294maybe Bree could have its own little tramway… that would be fun
February 3, 2009 at 2:50 pm #4295We could call it “Breetish Rail”…
February 3, 2009 at 4:06 pm #4296😆 😆 😆 ….huoommm … that’s good one, Master Barliman … very good indeed … huom

Personally the annual standstill that this country suffers from is pathetic when put against real hardship and real cold weather experienced by other countries and is an embarrassment.
I have spent a few winter ‘holidays’ in a past life enjoying the minus whatever temperatures of Norway and although they do have an (almost) guaranteed heavy winter and therefore the proper equipment to deal with it, 10′ snow drifts didn’t seem to phase them in the slightest!
In fairness because the winters in some parts of the country do not warrant the buying and maintenance of fleets of snow clearing equipment I guess it is a case of cost, but hey, we get caught out every year.
Breetish Rail Barli, you would never get any customers here on time but I suppose Master Theobald could look after the ‘branch’ line to Buckland. and keep all the leaves off the tracks (my other favourite delay).
Anyhow to bring this back on track if the Fellowhip had had a decent snow plough they could have avoided Moria altogether!!
February 3, 2009 at 8:38 pm #4299I believe where Gavin and fellow Northmen live 10cm of snow is classified as a” light dusting”;something I don’t think the Pony has had any fear of attaining.
February 4, 2009 at 6:25 am #4300Think of the bad and long winter, when the white wolves came over the Brandywine….
February 4, 2009 at 7:21 am #4301Ah yes, good old days – they never complained about my burgers-in-a-bun.
