Variants are not conversions.
January 17, 2009 at 7:03 pm #4145Variants are not conversions.
January 17, 2009 at 7:09 pm #4146So this B1 of the Mw336 (mounted captain) is a variant, I think.

January 17, 2009 at 7:40 pm #4147Well, Gildor, and all the others, of course, I try to stick to the definitions about variants and conversions. The one above, e.g. is a Mithril casting and varies slightly the figure that later was produced in the regular Mw336 war band (just the pose of the horse’s left foot).
To me that is a variant.
As far as I know we also have those variants of the bear M86 (paw up + paw down), the different heads of the M145 (The Mouth of Sauron), the variant of the MX436 (Burzash/different shield) and the MX463 (Imrahil/raised sword).
The ‘variancy’ of the “Dwaw of Waw” still might be discussed. To me it still is a variant, other than the MS423A Galadriel which was replaced by the MS423 (Aragorn) which shows a completely different figure (which simply means that there was a change in the concept of which figures to release).
I would like to receive some answers or comments here, as I just tried to start this thread about variants.January 17, 2009 at 9:15 pm #4150so here is my point of view regarding “what is a variant”
MS423A for example is not a variant… it is a prototype… for a given scale (32mm) she has no counterpart that could be the original from which this Galadriel IS a “variant”… so it is not one…
the captain of MW336, Burzash with variant shield and Beorn, and your Imrahil with sword are variants…. for a simple reason : they have the strictly same reference (or subreference) but have a slight (or more visible) difference in their casting.
the Dwar of Waw (ok you like to say Dwaw…) which is not in the LR range is a prototype too though… though it could be a variant… it is actually a prequel, which was meant for another purpose , and this project was never released. It was thus used as a base for the LR counterpart…
for me a variant… has been released… with same reference number… but with an oddity…
If, let’s admit, that Christmas 1989 Isildur vignette is the same (approximatly) as the Isildur/Othar/Elrond later MV vignette… it won’t be a variant, the same way Christmas 1992 is not a variant of the MA1… (though they are much alike), and the same way the Patrick Sarsfield from Edman Collection is not the same as Christmas 1991 Patrick Sarsfield (not same reference… though almost identical)
January 18, 2009 at 1:02 pm #4155Morlas is a Unique/promotional (if a choice is to be made…) according to me
PM is from the Phaeton Miniatures “spinoff” releases, since we will soon have a PM2… this kind of vignette is not meant to remain unique
I have put them in my database you can check under what category they have been put (Morlas is not there yet though)
January 18, 2009 at 4:34 pm #4157B1 (1994) a variant of the mounted officer from the Mw336 Gondorian warband
[imgz url=http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/9_b1_gondorian_army_officer_mounted_v.jpg]http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/thumbs/9_b1_gondorian_army_officer_mounted_v.jpg[/imgz]
These pics were taken from the ‘Master’-casting of the figure.
