June 23, 2012 at 11:13 am #24385I do agree with Master Ori. Very nice shadings in the use of the colours. Yes, and Master Thanniel exactly stuck to the rules of the contest.
June 23, 2012 at 11:16 am #24386Yes indeed, I love the way you achieve constrasts, clothes textures. And I want to applause beregond’s shield. 😎
To my point of view, you are one of Top 3 favourites for the final win.
June 23, 2012 at 9:38 pm #24391… great painting job Thanniel …. all compliments…

August 2, 2012 at 8:36 pm #24614Hi guys,
all the paintshops are really wonderful. As a professional nitpicker *g+ I’ll have to note one detail unrelated to the paintingIt seems to me that the position of the Troll’s weapon hand does not match the supposed sequence of events. He has smashed Beregond’s shield with a swing from (his) right to the left, where the hand and the hammer are at the end of their swing. Now, if I had to make such a swing, I’d have a downhand grip (fingers and thumb on top and palm below shaft). Anatomically, it does not make sense (as a right-handed guy) at all to swing from right to left with the thumb to the left, as the force of the swing rests on the thumb rather than the edge of the hand and the firmness of four fingers. IMO it is natural to do it the other way round (thumb on right and the palm below the shaft of the hammer and the other four fingers gripping tightly upwards). From this perspective, it looks like the Troll is preparing to swing his hammer from left to right (e.g. before the stroke), but since his opponent’s shield is already cracked from the previous one, he obviously struck him in a very strange way
Cheers
TolwenAugust 2, 2012 at 8:57 pm #24615I see what you mean, but does it matter? Put it down to artistic licence! It’s still a great vignette.
August 2, 2012 at 9:01 pm #24616Absolutely right, Master of criticism.
And therefor you have to take a careful eye on how the Troll and Master Beregond stand to eachother.
For me- the Troll just hit him and Beregond is tumbling- somehow . . . Therefor the distance between the two figures had to be corrected.
For me that was a very important point.
That means you have changed the vignette . . .[imgz url=http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/32_concept_small.jpg]http://mmp.faerylands.eu/uploads/thumbs/32_concept_small.jpg[/imgz]
August 2, 2012 at 9:29 pm #24617Well, one could reason that he struck him “correctly” and already changed his grip/hand positioning for the next swing from the left to the right. In context with the staggering Beregond that’s only partly satisfying from the perspective of directly correlating hit and effect though (IMHO!). But it looks very nice anyway as Master Barliman noted
I already bought it too, but I think I’ll take a Troll from another company (if I ever get to paint minis again – only collecting nowadays unfortunately…) as I personally don’t deem the Mithril trolls a good representation of Middle-earth’s Trolls. But I already have some ideas for other uses for them
Cheers
TolwenEDIT: This does not reduce in any way my judgement of the superior craftsmanship of the Trolls – it only refers to their design!
August 3, 2012 at 3:35 pm #24622…. very interesting observation Master Tolwen and magnificent drawn concept Master archer… to withstand a series of these shots Beregond had to be stronger than this troll… twice… 😆
August 25, 2012 at 10:25 pm #24731I know it’s a bit late to unbury this topic… but I thought I would share the final result of my own version… it took me months to achieve this beregond vignette, by lack of time to paint it on a regular basis .. Tonight I achieved it and took pics (though the pics I consider awful… but mostly because the light was not good at all I think… I will retake some during daytime…)
Well here is my Beregond, excuse the poor quality (of pics and painting…)
