Rhuoommm … what is a ‘Christmas Owl’ and who is Mistress Judy West? … rhuoommm … and by the by ‘Christmas Owl’ is not a name … might help to distinguish some creatures from others, but a name? … though owl is correct, but not the correct answer … sorry
November 30, 2009 at 4:51 pm #8149Actually master erchamion is correct but let me complete…
Owlamoo, along with another “monster” Maddo, are drawn in 1928 by JRRT, these are two ghosts from the imagination of Michael Tolkien when he was 6-8 years old. They were considered mythologic monsters from the nursery .
Owlamoo is a sinister owl shade, perched on top of desks or paintings, looking at you with a evil eye.well that’s all
November 30, 2009 at 7:01 pm #8156Huoommm … you’re always quicker with answering my riddles than me trying to find some … rhuooommm … yes, of course, it’s “Owlamoo” Master Erchamion … oh, by the by, I was not aware that in Spain you keep postcards that long … anyway, there’s a point for that.
Now you, Master Gildor Inglorion, wandering Elf as you still are … let me tell you that your latest reply to the query was reveiling some very fine background-information about that owly-beast.
That might deserve some 1/2 extra-point additionally in case everybody else agrees.
Sorry, but I have to be busy with taking that half-point and them feathery-owly-beings-that-are not-sinister-nor-looking-at-you-with-an [<-sic "n"] evil-eye to Athens ... rhuoommm ... but I'll be back soon and meanwhile will contemplate about riddles our Elf cannot solve ... rhuomm ... hard job that is ... hooommmNovember 30, 2009 at 7:02 pm #8157Riddle 2-the meaning of the second line : There is a black shadow in the deep dales of the forest (forest many shadowed-deepvalley-black deepvalleyforested gloomyland)
November 30, 2009 at 7:38 pm #8158Rhuuoommm … see? … someone around here still understands Entish-Quenya … that’s 1/2 point which was left to be given to you, Master Regalrick. But I would like to pass on the correct translation of the second line:
“Forestmanyshadowed-deepvalleyblack Deepvalleyforested Gloomyland.”
meaning more or less “There is a black shadow in the deep dales of the forest.”
Good old Treebeard was trying to tell this. As he was not a native speaker of Quenya he was not using Entish sounds on that occasion, but used ancient Elvish words mixed up and run together in Entish fashion. The elements are “laure”, “gold” , not the metal but the colour, what we should call golden light; “ndor”, “nor”, land , country; “lin”, “lind-” a musical sound; “malina” yellow; “orne” tree, “lor” dream; “nan”, “nand” valley. So he means with his first line:
“The valley where the trees in a golden light sing musically, a land of music and dreams; there are yellow trees there, it is a tree-yellow land”
Rhuoommm … the same applies to the second line, where the elements are “taure” forest; “tumba” deep valley; “mor” darkness; “lóme” light;of course I could explain all this more detailed, but I just thought it might be sufficient for giving half a point to Master Regalrick … still I have to carry them owls to Athens … rhuoomm
November 30, 2009 at 7:44 pm #8159Another name for The Tree of Amalion would be The Tree of Tales
November 30, 2009 at 8:00 pm #8160Amalion may derive from Quenya: amalya -‘rich blessed’
amal -‘riches,blessings,bliss good fortune’
alam -‘elm tree’November 30, 2009 at 8:06 pm #8161great, Master regalrick, absolutely great as it is “The Tree of Tales”. (Did I help anybody suggesting to think about alliterations? – In case I did, it could have been witnessed by everybody around here.)
I think this was the most difficult one to find out about.
Tolkien referred to that tree in his essay “On Fairy-Stories” as ‘the tree of tales’, which surely is the Tree of Amalion. Of course Tolkien related to the tree in “Leaf by Niggle” but there he did not call it a Tree of Tales, though there he explained how thoughts can be sprung- that’s why I quoted from that lately.
well done, Master Regalrick … though your answer simply was one sentence, there’s not even a full stop at the Ent … rhuoommm hasty that is, isn’t it?November 30, 2009 at 8:27 pm #8162hey, now, what’s that?
Sorry, but while I was typing Master Regalrick also explained the origin of that Name relating to Quenya … and it’s perfect.
As “amalya” is Quenya and an adjective to the noun “amal”. The later form was “alam” but with the same meaning. That ‘alam’ can still be regarded as an elm-tree. There are hints for that in “The Ethymologies (The lost road and other writings, p. 348)”
Master Regalrick … there’s 1 1/2 point for you tonight …November 30, 2009 at 8:32 pm #8163The lifetime of an adventurer is very hasty and short Master Theobald compared to the time of an Elf or the Wisest of Ents.Rarely time for a full stop nor I am well versed in “Old Entish”. My answers often are simple but I am not yet ready to meet my Ent.
November 30, 2009 at 8:40 pm #8164rhuoommm …. sorry but now I really have to carry them feathery-friends to Athens … screachy claws they have and don’t hold still … alas … it’ll be a long way back … without them … huoom
December 1, 2009 at 5:47 pm #8175Huoommmm … so here we are … let’s see
Master Gildor 6 points
Master Regalrick 4 1/2 points
Master Erchamion 3 points
Master Protozeus 1 pointI hope this is correct. If not don’t hesitate to correct me, please.
December 6, 2009 at 2:27 pm #8238Huommmrhuoommm … well, ahem, so to say … huoomm … this Sunday I chose to provide three more riddles … just for fun, you know … something in between, so to say, just to cast away some more points so that others who have not taken part in this riddely-thing would have a chance to get in … rhuoommm … you know ….
3 questions, one point each for correct answers, only one answer per person is allowed – dis-answers will not be regarded as answers and therefore will not have a chance to gain any point here … rhuoommm … only three people taking part in this riddle … less than last year … huoommm I will have to think it over again … and again … and again …December 6, 2009 at 2:37 pm #8239So, well … this time the riddles are not all about trees … as I value those tiny beings that are sometimes older than trees …
1st question is about a picture I just saw again. What I do like about the picture is the fact that there are trees in it … ahem part of trees, so to say.

There are two names for the same given by Mr Tolkien. What are they?
Remember that you just have one answer which must include two names. In case you just want to have half a point, one name correct name would be sufficiant.December 6, 2009 at 2:39 pm #82402nd riddle:
Does anyone remember what happened to Oín ?
December 6, 2009 at 2:41 pm #82423rd
There’s a large wood between the Sirion and the Gelion – what’s the name?December 6, 2009 at 2:42 pm #8243Killed in the Mines of Moria, whence he had accompanied Balin & Co. in an ill-considered quest to reclaim the lost kingdom. Actually, to be more precise, the Watcher in the Water got him.
December 6, 2009 at 2:45 pm #8244…And I think it was the Forest of Brethil, but I confess I’m a little hazy on that one. No, second thoughts it was probably Neldoreth. Or, er, Taur-im-Duinath? Honestly, I’ guessing, but it was definietly one of them. Where’s my map-case when I need it? That rogue Nob’s got it I suspect.
I’ll settle on Taur-im-Duniath – though I’m not even sure I’ve spelt that right. Do I get any points for effort?
December 6, 2009 at 2:48 pm #8245Sorry, I just disqualified myself … 4 people are taking part in this. Ents once learned to trumpet, but not to calculate or even count. Maybe this is why we have become a rare species.
December 6, 2009 at 3:02 pm #8246Ahem, whatever company is hidden behind the name Balin & Co. (as I always thought of them as Balin Ltd.) … your answer about that Dwarf was correct, Master Barliman. The ‘Watcher in the Water’ got him at the West gate, so he wasn’t killed in the Mines of Moria, as you stated, that is a different place, far away from the Western Gate. Anyway, I think this point is yours.
