Here’s a little something special from the dusty archives I thought I share. I realize there has been some discussion of plate armor and elf knights and such. For the table top crowd, just imagine a contingent of these guys riding to battle in the second or even the third age!

Of course some explaination should be in place. This is another part of Mithril history, as our beloved tree likes to put it. It is from our talented friend Mr NN. It is a simple and obvious conversion made around ten years ago and is cast in two pieces, rider and horse. For those of you experiencing that sinking feeling which would come about at the very thought of cutting up such a rare figure as M247, rest assured no Mithril where harmed in this process!

For myself, a want-to-be Mithril army builder, I think something like a mounted elf knight like this would be great to see (those plastic offerings from the EE just don’t do it for me!).

I just had to post this before the Master Tree helps me run out of surprises!April 27, 2010 at 5:40 pm #9688And to me this is a d****d surprise indeed, Master Kenakko. A very nice surprise, indeed. Until now I didn’t know about this marvellous conversion.
So thank you very much for sharing these pictures!Me? Letting you run out of surprises? … How could I, Master Kenakko. I just have a very rough idea about the conversions you have … and many of them certainly are top-most gems among Mithril-conversions. That’s what I know.
So here you have what you wanted …. a silent (or speechless, breathless tree) … huoommApril 27, 2010 at 5:55 pm #9690Well, I especially like to share these with you Master Tree because you like this sort of thing as much as I do!
April 27, 2010 at 5:57 pm #9691Yes, so it seems to be
April 28, 2010 at 11:22 am #9704Master NN knows what he is doing!
Very nice he is this knight.
Oh no it starts again…..:rolleyes:April 28, 2010 at 12:41 pm #9706??? … what starts again ??? … discussion about Elven mail? … chain mail … plate armour … ?
April 28, 2010 at 1:06 pm #9708LOL Master Ent, no discussion about mail, just that when I looked at the pics of this conversion, a few ideas popped into my head.
April 28, 2010 at 1:18 pm #9709Very nice conversion indeed, Master Kenakko. Too bad he’s wearing a non-canon full plate armour (just kidding!).
April 28, 2010 at 2:30 pm #9712When I think of plates and mail I think of dinner and the means by which precious Mithril arrive at my domicile! I admit being concrete at times….but I think I would say a couple of things here about the man’s choices for his interpretations. We know he has great interest in the Romans and I think his representation of the full plate armor from past ages for elves and Numenor are artistic conventions to show a cultural decline something akin to going from ‘Lorica segmenta’ to Late Empire. Perhaps there is a parallel with Tolkien, too; how to represent a decline from former glory? As far as the reality of it all, well it’s fantasy! And Art. And it should be fun, too! Not being a Tolkien scholar or military arms authority my opinions are simple. Just give me cool looking minis!
April 28, 2010 at 2:51 pm #9713I think that’s the idea too – higher technology gives way to a “dark age” restored somewhat by the Return of the King. It was a concept played around with in early MERP supplements like “Lorien and the Elven Smiths.” Terry Amthor gave the Gwaith-i-Mirdain things like aluminium and working lifts and things. Later games would call this idea magi-tech and you see lots of this concept in the Amthor-authored Shadow World.
These things were conceived and executed before many had access to Tolkien’s notes, and before we all got the notion that “mail” really means mail, what gamers call “chain-mail” so the high-elves in plate armour is part of a visual continuity.
Nice conversion too!
April 28, 2010 at 4:22 pm #9714Oh, what have I done …
I just misunderstood our Master Caster’s comment “Oh no it starts again”
As I understand him now new ideas of other conversions came to his mind.
So, it was me being wrong to interprete the word “again” as being referred to an old discussion about ‘mail’. – Sorry for being that hasty. -
