I agree with your suggestion Wendy; Gildor, lets have a poll (without the words “wargame”) that we can check all that apply!

I’ll submit the poll on the official board… I think it has its place on the official one more than here… Michael and Lars need visibility about that

(I’ll only be able to do it tomorrow, so if another Moderator of the official board can do it before I do, please do so :)

Good point Mistress Wendy, better avoid the word “wagame”. And glad you agree about the detail issue (by the way, thanks for jarhead’s blog).

Master Elf, saddly big hands and feet are common in 30 mm miniatures… even in Mithril’s!

For example, compare [mith]M509[/mith] with this Elf. However, I agree there are far worse out there and it’s a common flaw. Could be an interesting step for Mithril going more realistic.

ah but M509 and this elf you mention are ok with me… the viking in your former post was not, well according to me

Being objective, do you think M508 hands size are realistic (specially when compared with his head size)? Looks like he could grab his whole head with his two hands to me. Anyway, I of course respect your opinion, Master Elf, and I’ll do my best to stay on topic from now on.

Master Arthadan, everything is possible. My grandfather had hands like that. Sometimes nature plays funny tricks. My father also had very lage hands, but small compared to the hands of my grandfather. I don’t have small hands either, but it seems they shrink through the generations. ;)

                  Yes, everything can happen.
I once shaked the hand of a Basketball player 2.31m tall ==> his hand reached half my forearm!

his name is Gheorghe Mureşan look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gheorghe_Muresan

Of course I agree thre are exceptions to the genreal ‘rule’. But if we say someone has big hands is because we are refering to ‘bigger than most people hands’. In other words, if a miniatures company produce all its figures with big hands, it can’t be a natural case of a guy with bigger hands than average, but a case that the proportions are off.

If you want to read some insights about this, take a look to Tom Meier’s blog (entry of Saturday, February 28. 2009). For the busy/lazy ones such myself, it can be resumed in this image. I think Mithrils is somewhere between second and third model.

I would have placed Mithril between 1st and second model….. GW being FAR after the Third model….
and usually, many companies fitting completly in the third model…

                      but indeed, that’s how I see them…

You are not wrong my friend. The proportions are not 100% right. Maybe 65% 😆 I still love Mithril. they look alive to me, not like 99% of that GW s..t and stuff from a lot of other companies too. I alway’s liked the figs from Tom Meier and I do have a few from him. I also had a large ammount of GW and Grenadier figs which I sold most of it years ago when I returned to Mithril. The rest of figures from other companies then Mithril are getting less and less, because I found a nice way to improve them. 😎 Larger pieces and old stuff will eventually go back to ebay.

Re the proportions – I think it is a common thing among sculptors, probably more so than thought. I remember a well known sculptor (Sid Horton R.I.P.) who used to run his own line of figures which I think were mainly 54mm subjects and fairly well scaled, but when he started sculpting 120mm figures for Verlinden Productions, some of his figures, notably a Battle of Britain pilot, this chap loked as if he was the ‘Missing-Link’ as his arms would have caused his hands to drag on the floor , I think he also sculpted some German infantry with hands like shovels and totally out of proportion to the rest of the figure.

I have also noticed that some sculptors attempting to sculpt children quite often make the figure look like a scaled down adult rather than a smaller person with correct proportions – CT’s Bergil visually looks spot on to me.

This also looks wrong with the movie Hobbits who look as if they have been proportionately reduced in size (which I guess is what they have been) rather than smaller figures – again I think CT has the hobbits looking visually correct (that’s my opinion of course and I haven’t checked visually to back this statement up :P).

My own rule is ‘If it looks right, it is right’, and ALL sculptors fall foul of this at some stage.
