Mithril M 367 PORTE ETENDARD DES MONTS DE FERMay 10, 2010 at 8:30 am #9886So many miniatures, also rare-ones! WOW !!!
This could be a nice point to inform all of you about the followowing fact:
Some weeks agoI have ordered by the above mentioned “seller” ONE miniature . . . The number of that figure was “below 100” .
So, I know nearly all miniatures from 001-099 and I know, that these figures have got a special “heaviness”, a certain weight.
By the way, one of the reasons I admire these little treasures . . .
Well, this figure defenetly has got a mysterious lightweight. Strange that is !!!! Further: Mithril NEVER put undercoat UNDER the base.
These are manufactural reasons, as everybody knows. So, I want to tell you: be careful ! And make your mind up this “seller”May 10, 2010 at 9:47 am #9889Well,
I bought several references to M. D (15 in 1 bet), and I have to say this:
I requested by mail pictures of the real miniatures (as he shows pictures from his own collection).
The man provided me pictures, I checked and chose to buy the set.
Everything I received was exactly as on the picture.Still, about Christoph remark. It is true that 2 minis looked strange (M1 & M2…).
Since, I bought again those 2 minis in mint condition and I can say that, apart from undercoat which seems to be half removed (chemical process I guess), weight is the same.
My conclusion and advice is therefore:
Do not hesitate to request real pictures before buying. The man is very expensive but serious (no too fast also).May 10, 2010 at 10:27 am #9891Well, he is slow! But the matter Master Estel pointed out shows, there was NEVER be a PM 1 primed. So this could be a self-primed-edition.
I have primed my edition with a greyish undercoat as well, for photographic reasons. So it mustn´t be a . . . ( I don´t say the word . . )
In my case, Master Milo, somebody could have stripped off the original undercoat, he or somebody else could have taken a self-undercoat again.
But this is improbable. Anyway, the main point is the WEIGHT.
There is NO mithril miniature EVER with this light weight. (instead of the LR-range!)May 10, 2010 at 10:38 am #9892That is right Christoph, there is no mini cast by Mithril in the light alloy.
If you have the possobility to get the exact weight and what mini it is, we can cross check with other minis , what weight they have.May 10, 2010 at 11:43 am #9893OK, I will do this, certainly!
May 10, 2010 at 1:06 pm #9894A letter scale is close enough. If a figur weighs 2grams less then a other one, then there is something not original on the lighter one.
May 12, 2010 at 11:25 pm #9945OK, Master Caster, I have weighed a M 39 in comparison to the figure I received from that man in france. This is the M 66.
So the M 39 has a weight of 20 gramms and the M 66 has got 14 gramms.
This is what I can tell you . . .May 13, 2010 at 10:51 am #9946LOL, Christoph, that’s not what I meant.
You have to compare the same Figure. I do not have a M66, but I’m sure our Master Ent has this nice piece including a letter scale to put it on top and to find out if his one has got the same weight.
Could you please (with cherry on top) do this for us Master Ent?
Anyone else who has got a M66 and a Letter scale is welcome to put his on the scale aswell.
But anyhow, I have recasted a fig in light ally and compared to the original it lost 5 grams….May 13, 2010 at 12:29 pm #9948I have a kitchen scale that is accurate to within 1 gram. I’ll take some time this weekend to weigh a few key figures for reference purposes. It might be interesting to include this data in the figure references to help buyers verify that their purchases are genuine. I’d be willing to compile and average out any weight submissions and supply that data for the community.
May 13, 2010 at 12:37 pm #9949Thanks Master Presto, thats a good idea!
May 14, 2010 at 12:01 am #9960Yes, gentlemen the weight is the key to finding recasts. Our Irish friend Dan Joe told me this himself some years ago. The problem is that one has to have an orignal for reference (paint and primer are neglible additions, but all parts should be present). To my knowledge, all of the pre-100 figures have that heavier weight due to the higher lead content. Publishing the weights is a different matter as I think consumers paying big bucks need to have an out if they unknowingly buy a recast. But then again, it would be hard to match the wieghts exactly anyway, right Holger? Interesting stuff about Mr D, though….
May 14, 2010 at 2:42 am #9963Well, to the best of my knowledge, I have originals of most of the M series figs. That’s where averaging multiple weights comes into play. Toss out any outlying data points and average the rest to obtain a reasonable standard by which to measure each figure. Really it becomes a tool to ferret out anyone who is attempting to pass on re-cast figures as originals. It would be a level of protection for collectors trying to fill in those last few rare references. Granted, a skillled artisan with the proper alloy could still pass muster.
May 14, 2010 at 4:51 am #9964True, but this is also where the accuracy comes in. Perhaps better than that provided by a postal scale. I once weighed a couple of valuable figures, one recast, one original and the weight difference was more than 1 gram! I figured this was due to the lead content variation. There were otherwise identical down to a matching shade of primer, suitably ‘worn’. I must say that I could ‘feel’ the difference in weight that a nice scale proved to be there (I was in a chemistry class at the time and did a little extra homework). Also, though it is difficult to believe, they sounded different when rubbed or tapped!! That pewter ring thing. I would assume all the early figures to have been cast from the same batches ingots at the same time with very little individual differences present for each copy. I think a data with this information could serve the buyer the best and there aren’t many (if any) recasters out there who would try to fool collecters…but then again, people do sometimes disappoint!
May 14, 2010 at 6:32 am #9965as I think all my mithril are genuine (well I bought, quite some years ago, figurines from this drizztdourden) but most were still in blisters I could not tell exactly which ones I bought from him… and all seemed fine and engraved and genuinly engraved.
I don’t have letter scale or any “precise” balance that could help give the weight. but if some willing persons here can provide me weight data, I’ll be more than happy to adapt the current database to add this information. but it has to be the RIGHT weight, we can’t allow to publish false data on such matters. Maybe I should ask what he thinks to mister Tubb he might be able to help. he once told me he keeps at least ONE of each of his “tolkien” creation for his personal collection. so all of his own would be genuine BUT I really don’t think he would have time to weight al his collection.
May 14, 2010 at 7:14 am #9968As I said I can’t help with the weight of the M66, but I can provide a weight for quite a few of the under 100.
I also have to correct my statement that there is no mini cast by Mithril in the light alloy. We actually do have the MX436 which is not cast with the standard high lead contend Mithril uses normally. So he is cast in a lighter alloy and I’m 100% sure the one I have is not a recast, because I got him direct from Mithril.May 14, 2010 at 8:32 am #9970well there are different “levels” of metal quality from Mithril “standard metal” “model metal” and “5 star metal”
5star metal is lead free if I remember correctly and is the most expansive.
standard metal is more than 62% of lead, and model metal is the one usually sold by Mithril for casting sets…(54% lead)thus I assume “5star metal” is the lightest of them… and “standard metal” the heaviest…
Now in what alloy do mithril cast their figurine currently?
Indeed there is also the possibility mithril is casting their own “genuine” miniatures in a fourth metal they do not sale at all (and do not describe).. actually, in order to prevent piracy… providing we have the correct weight value but all the correct weights are provided on the mithril web site… (for the references they sell…)
May 14, 2010 at 12:24 pm #9972If I look at the horses and the wulf with cut of casting channels, falling over during time because the legs can’t bear the weight, I guess they where cast with the 62% lead…
May 14, 2010 at 3:27 pm #9976Drooping horses! I would concur. Yes, Mithril do now post the weights for mailing costs, but it’s been a while since they’ve mailed any M16’s. Perhaps a data refernce on the figures less than 100 is what is needed.
