not to mention the impact it may have on average prices… can you imagine if people would begin selling recast of MW half orcs or early christmas figurines…
For a collector painter , for his personnal utilisation, it may be somewhat cool to have a “copy for your own use” so that you paint the copy and you do not touch the original… but for profit… no way
I like to apologize once again to Holger it was really a misunderstanding from me:) I did not accuse want of anything
September 5, 2008 at 3:13 pm #3067Have you seen the latest offers on Ebay? There are 3 interesting series offered. Two of them include the M1 to M20 (except M7 and M16 of course).
Well, and then The Man is offering some nice pieces (so one can be sure about the quality of the figures). I wonder at which price that good old camel-rider will end. I haven’t seen him on Ebay for quite a while.
Then there’s a C6C of Saruman’s Army offered by a German seller … that’s strange but the figure seems to be original, except the fact that the round shield seems to be missing.September 5, 2008 at 3:14 pm #3068We haven’t seen many of the Saruman’s army figures lately, so it will be interesting to see how the prices for these are bearing up.
September 5, 2008 at 3:22 pm #3069Yes, but most of the time it’s those pikemen who appear. Those were the first ones of that army The Man sold (even as a single figure). I think the other batches will never appear again.
September 5, 2008 at 3:24 pm #3070There also appear to be far more pikemen about than any of the other figures.
September 5, 2008 at 4:21 pm #3071Those pikemen must have been the figure(s) of which a definitely higher number of castings were made – compared to the other lads of the army. Before the pikemen-set was offered there was at least one single pikemen on Ebay. Then there also were gifts.
As far as I can recall all those single pieces had no shields. Those first appeared with the set-release.September 14, 2008 at 12:43 pm #3141Well well, look at this:
LOTR Tolkien MERP Mithril Miniatures Collection MOC/MIB
Well over 500 miniatures including M16; free shipping Item number: 230290548412I do not know what happened to Marc, but I’m 99% certain that this is his collection!
He had more or less eveything in blisteer exept a M16 with a replica sword!
I will ask the seller if he/she knows anything regarding his dissappearence.September 14, 2008 at 1:02 pm #3142I hope it is not a sad ‘ending’ to the story should it not be Marc himself selling this collection.
To an extent it was he who brought us all together with the original MMP site so any information you can gather Holger would I’m sure be appreciated by the rest of us.
Fingers crossed.
September 14, 2008 at 1:08 pm #3143I’ll keep you informed as soon as I get a response!
September 14, 2008 at 4:36 pm #3144I’d prefer it remained a mystery rather than hear bad news! There must be other people out there with Mithril collections to sell, so let’s hope this is one of them.
September 14, 2008 at 6:19 pm #3145My guess is that this is indeed the collection of Marc and he is the seller. A glance at some past transactions gives a few familiar names. Zoetrop might know for sure. The man may have simply moved along in his interests and divesting of his collection. It is his and, as sad as it is, he is free to do what he wants with it. Further, he doesn’t really owe anyone any explanations. We all benefitted and maybe that’s enough. Thanks Marc and good luck on the final bid!!!
September 14, 2008 at 8:20 pm #3146that would be odd nevertheless to cancel a website and a community without warning, that’s not only about his collection here… there must be something else
September 14, 2008 at 10:16 pm #3147Odd, yes, but not entirely unheard of in the realm of human behavior. He’s our “long gone Daddy”, who went out for cigarettes one evening, and never came back! I suppose an explanation is what everyone wants (and he is a nice guy, too, so people just may want to know that he’s okay). He actually left some of us hanging with the old MMP with only very limited means to update the site itself. But often life can leave us without answers. I just wish him well without anything else. He did a great service to Mithril collectors at his own expense of both time and money. Perhaps he just doesn’t do well with goodbyes!
September 15, 2008 at 6:04 am #3148mmhh I checked the list , and did you notice the last figurines on the list? it goes up until MS439… which is quite recent. Marc “disappeared” quite a long time before these were released though. but well as Kenakko says, maybe he went to other things and was well with goodbyes.
September 15, 2008 at 6:15 am #3149Can enthusiasm for a hobby wane so much from such heights in so short a time? Crivvens! (sorry, just read Pratchett’s ‘Wee Free Men’ again…) – so does that mean I’ll want to sell off my Star Wars collection one day? Perish the thought! Mind you, it would fetch enough to finance the next extension to the Pony and pay for my GF figures until the Fifth Age rolls round (or is that already here? – I get confused).
September 15, 2008 at 12:57 pm #3150I hope he has not given up collecting Mithrils as I still keep an Imrahil variant for him. On the other hand Kenakko should know Marc and his collection best, I think. Let’s see.
September 15, 2008 at 5:48 pm #3151“Crivvens!?” Yes, Barliman, it is possible to abandon a long held hobby. Though I’ve never done this myself, I know some that have. I’m too retentive I guess! Keep up the Star Wars and other interests. And Theobald, others may know Marc better than I. I was late in coming and far away. He was pleased to have my pictures and contributions to his site. He tried to make MMP self governing by committee, but didn’t find a webmaster able to do the necessary work. I did notice he didn’t include a MW347 pikeman I sent to him as a gift in his listing so maybe he’s kept a couple of things.
September 16, 2008 at 2:28 pm #3152Thank you Ken for those explanations … it’s just what I guessed about Marc and the old MMP … well, the attempt he took in the end to that what you call a “self governing by committee” was not a bad idea at all … for some time then you yourself took the responsibility of providing or organizing pics … have a look at the “new” MMP … there also are people who feel responsible about this or other matters … to keep it all up and find a “webmaster able to do the necessary work” (which means more work to be done than most of us do realize) … that might have lead Mithrandir to give it up … the more we around here should value the work Gildor is doing since January … rhuoommmm …. sorry … I’m in the wrong thread with some of these comments …
September 16, 2008 at 3:06 pm #3153You are indeed. It’s less thirsty work if you’re in the bar!
September 16, 2008 at 4:43 pm #3154I was in contact with Marc for a long long time ago when mmp_discussion was still a yahoo group and there was not yet a website (nor his own database, exchange base, mailboard)… Later he contacted me when I was building up the roots and infrastructure of my database project… and I was reluctant to speed up my own project because I did not want to enter in competition with Marc, he proposed me to join forces, to work with him on MMP with his existing architecture but the idea of my project was too different from MMP at the time that I could not melt the two projects in a single one. I offered my help of course but I kept working on my project. It’s about this time that I stopped hearing from him actually… though the MMP site kept working for several months from that point, until, I suppose, the annual fee was not renewed or paid to his web host…
I don’t regret the fact that I did not stop my own project to come help contribute to his site (of which I had absolutly no access to the code and ftp files) . Had I not done so by that time…. the current MMP would not have come into existence that soon
