I for one am excited about this reboot. Could it mean the end of flawed (meaning not true to Tokien) depiction of our favourite characters? The MERP interpretation has certainly affected the line since its very begining with quite wrong assumptions, later kept for continuity’s sake.
How many identical Gandalf miniatures (in different poses) can you really need? I haven’t got the 20th anniversary Gandalf because it felt more of the same old and it brings nothing new nor exciting to my collection.
I do hope this marks the start of a line closer to the Profesor’s vision.
Wow! Impressive!

I beg to differ Master Elf.
Let’s take this for example: http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/xenobiologist.jpg
This miniature looks like a nice 30mm… but it is 15mm tall!

Maenas wrote:It is a pity that Mithril is “promoting” my kind of behaviour… I mean. There must be more people thinking this very same thing… “I will wait for the next discount” If I were the owner I would prefer a kind of steady income, than a couple or three yearly huge incomes. With this method/behaviour they are also discouraging people from the autoshipment, I think….I certainly am waiting for a juicy discount to get these. No way I’m paying that price for these “dated but charming” miniatures. I recently got some very old Ral Partha miniatures from the 80’s (Tom Meier’s Goblins) and they are more detailed than these Orcs.
Great conversion an painting, way to go Master Thingol!
Thanks, Master Caster!
They look good, I’m wondering if this will have any impact on pricing.
That’s some interesting news! Care to upload the pictures of the 3D sculpts here, please?
February 11, 2016 at 2:03 pm in reply to: Mithril’s painting league 02 – Votings and opinions on finished works #34091I won’t vote in the poll since I’m not paticipating, but some comments if I may..
First, you have all my respect for your comittment (I can’t keep your pace!)
Before going into details, I think Master Orc is on holidays, so I doubt he can post anything until he’s back.
– Turambar: Great as always. I’ve always loved that miniature and you have made a great work bringing it to life. As noted before, the freehand on the cloak works very well. Maybe some more contrast between the background and the miniature would have been nice, as the grey stone and the silver armour are a bit close.
– Ddaines: Great skill. I like all the elements considered individually (base and miniature) , but I find the base too distracting for the composition. My eyes go straight to the door, and then my attention is divided between Isildur and the colourful floor. I think more muted colors for the floor and no door would have worked better.
– Milo: Nice choice of miniature! I specially like the highlights on the red fabric around his neck. I find the cloak and the skin too close, making the miniature a bit confusing and there is a mould line on the inside of the cloak.
– Maenas: Nice metals, but I think the picture is overexposed and I can’t really make out his face. Maybe bigger pics would be nice. Cloak looks great though.
– Gerold: This is what I call “tabletop painting level”. Nothing wrong with it, but you could benefit of risking more with highlights. Also, playing with different shades of red for clothes and shield could make the miniature more interesting (after all it would be really difficult to have your shield matching exactly your clothes). I think you’ve achieved a very natural color for the blond / light brown hair.
– Axel: As noted before, pic is blury. I think the miniature would benefit from stronger highlights, as all the metal armour looks the same. Working reflections and giving the chainmail a different tone from the plates so you can tell it apart would make it more interesting in my opinion. Can’t comment the face as I can’t see it properly.
My thoughts exactly, this Northman mercenary looks like an evolution after many years of doing the same (which wasn’t bad, but it was begining to look a bit dated compared with nowadays standards).
Also, I firmly belive any kind of artist should challenge himself every time he creates, his best work should always be the next one.
For the first time in many long years I’m excited about Mithril’s new releases. If only they would get rid of the damned plate armours…
happy birthday Master Thingol!
You’re welcome Master Orc!
i played a game yesterday and I’m quite happy with the rules, works very well for skirmish.
For bigger scale games, I’d recommend either Dragon Rampant by Osprey (here you are a review), or Saga Dark Ages by Gripping Beasts (with the unofficial LotR mod).
I’d say the Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes ruleset is the way to go, Master Orc.
It’s easy to learn and fast and fun to play plus you can personalise the profiles of your miniatures because it has a “online builder” (basically you design the profile you want, selecting stats scores and adding skills and it will calculate the point cost).
It has very handy skills when it comes to a Middle-earth setting such a terrible shriek some powerful undead can use to terrorize their enemies, monstruous cavalry (that would be wargs), rules for a big creature carrying normal-sized warriors (mûmakil) and so on.
Looking great.
We need a family picture with all of them!!!
Some conversions from my Muster of Rohan proyect:
My take on Erkenbrand using Aragorn at Helm’s deep as base and a rohan standard, you can see both in my gallery.
By the way, I’ve realised with this batch of miniatures Mr. Tubb insist in placing shields as far away as the body of the warrior as possible, instead of using it to protect it.
I mean this:
[mith]LT2[/mith] [mith]LT5[/mith]Then we have this combined with what I call the “Errol Flynn fancy fencing pose”, which makes little sense if you have a shield to parry with:
[mith]M510[/mith]This is brilliant in another level, the warrior is blinding himself with his own shield:
[mith]M513[/mith]I’ve bent shield’s arm closer to the body in a more believable position and I think they work better.
And I still have to add the earlier rohirrim on foot…
It’s a lot of work, I hope it won’t prove to be too much.

Very nice, I envy your speed!
Very nice works! It’s a good thing I can’t vote because I’d had a hard time chosing my favourite.
