I saw Bombadil did start this topic on the official board but I thought it better to discuss it somewhere else than in the GF boards as many people could be interested in this…. and well, maybe then, it will bring forth people on the MMP forum too ;)

Well the two Glorfindel are the one and same person. This is said by Tolkien himself in “People of Middle Earth” (HoME 12) and there are also hints about that in “The Letters” when he was asked the question…
In an early version, Glorfindel was even sent as a 6th Istari along with Gandalf and the others (but prior to their arrival)

Fact is, Glorfindel is one of the very few elves that got to be reincarnated from the Halls of Mandos to go back to Endor in the third Age. I can’t be sure if he kept all of his memory from Gondolin, but elven history is well known among all elves anyway.

he is a friend, and aide of Gandalf and knew him in Valinor it seems, when he was still Olorin…

This information is very helpfull, Master Gildor! As usual. Thank you.
Master Glorfindel also took part at the Concil of Elrond!
This is important for me, as I am currently preparing this scenery . . .

MERP games used to call the LOTR Glorfindel ‘Glorfindel II’ to separate him from the original one, but since it is a one and only person there is no need to used that.

Also indeed, Glorfindel was at the Ford of Rivendell to save Frodo with his horse Asfaloth, he was also at the council of Elrond. he was at the grey havens too with Gildor, when leaving Middle Earth at the end of LOTR.
I wonder but can’t remember though, if he was at the White Councils but he certainly was (implicitly mentionned)… as he may have been among the army who defeated the Necromancer in Dol Guldur and in the Mirkwood battle at the end of the 3rd Age too…

Damn, closed my window by accident.

I don’t recall any mention of Glorfindel at the Grey Havens at the end, but there is mention of Gildor. This has led to some speculation that Glorfindel remained in Middle-earth a while longer, possibly with Celeborn and the Sons of Elrond.

Thank you, Gildor, Gavin and Theobald,

I (re)found my old book “The complete guide to Middle Earth” by Robert Foster. I can confirm all you stated about him, Gildor. So, he is one of the most exciting “living” people of Middle Earth! Compared to him a lot of other elves, men or dwarves had a boring life. ;) And he was one of the mightiest and most successful warriors ever! As fighter and captain!

And @ Gildor: it works! Thank you! The look of the page is a lot better than before.:D

No one has mentioned the fact that it was also Glorfindel who uttered the famous words regarding the Witchking’s doom, declaring that he would not fall “by the hand of man”. All in all, he’s a very significant character indeed in Tolkien’s legendarium.

well he is the only “elven knight” (being a horse rider) that we know of… a pure Noldo warrior/knight who’s been there since the flight of the Noldor from Valinor… and until the end of the 3rd Age…

@bombadil : glad it works at last!!
