Ah, a customer at last. Is it your usual ginger beer shandy, Master Ken?

By the way, I was scared almost out of my breeches earlier today by a vicious rumour that my friends the Perrys had been ‘let go’ by GW, but happily it turns out to be untrue – like many rumours! So there are at least some capable hands still at work on the GW LOTR range, even if the worst of the unlamented Mr Morley’s creations have yet to be foisted upon the unsuspecting world. Rumour has it that his Mordor knights are dreadful, though I suppose it would be fairer to wait until I’ve actually seen them before agreeing.

      Master Barkeep.

I am sick. I have a cold and what may well be the dregs of a hangover, courtesy of a rival product.

And you mention there are WORSE Morley figures out there?

I need more anadin before considering these issues. MORE, damn you, more!

      Ahem.

Ginger beer shandys! Is that what I’ve been drinking?! Well then, by all mens keep them coming! And if your friends are ever let go, I’m sure they would get my support by adding a ‘fantasy’ line to their own fine miniatures. Heck, why should they even wait to do this? Have you ever asked them about this, Master Barkeep?

I have. I seem to recall that the word ‘money’ recurred in the conversation rather a lot.

And you’re right Gavin. Save some of those pills for me! I’m still astonished how far ahead GW must work, since Morley hasn’t been with them for over a year and yet we’re still being inflicted with his monstrosities. I was actually looking forward to seeing some genuine Mordor cavalry until I heard he was responsible for them, but now there’s no point in waiting for them.

So, a question for my patrons: in the absence of anything appropriate being available from either Mithril or GW’s LOTR ranges, can anyone suggest figures from another range or company that might do service as the Witchking’s black-clad cavalry on a wargame table?

I’m thinking that the various Crusader ranges from Perry Miniatures – eg, the Syrian Heavy Cavalry and maybe the Christian knights would make a good basis for the Witch King’s army. If you wanted to be a bit more daring, then perhaps the Thunderbolt Mountain Wood Elf mounted nobles.

I certainly have my eye on the Perry Minis as mounted warriors of Arthedain for the Last Northern War.

But, alas, no one makes anything that would fit the idea of the “grey clad” mounted warriors of Minas Morgul.

I was actually thinking the Arabized Christian knights might make good Gondorin cavalry stationed in Harandor. or all points south. A LOT of the Arab and Syrian stuff would be useful for various Sagath and Easterling variants. I think the casualties would be useful for wargaming as well. Save us from having to spoil Mithrils for use as the fallen!

I think the Perry’s (as I refer to their figs) match up pretty well size-wise with Mithrils. They have nice proportions as well, none of the goofy over-sized heads or weapons. Being historically based, the armor is understated and realistic as well. A friend of mine has both Muslim and Crusader armies based up singly for skirmish games, and they are lovely to look at!

Hmm, I suspect you are right, Presto.

Though my current priority is Arthedain in the twilight of that realm.

Well, current priority after I’ve painted all these bloody GW orcs (four more to go until I’ve painted all…70 of the little buggers. Then I suspect I’ll need to touch up another 30 or so).

Thanks for the suggestion, Gavin – I’ve got some of the Perrymins Crusades range (unpainted) in a box somewhere. I shall have to dig them out and take a look.

And Master Tree, if you keep calling my beer ‘watery’ you’ll ruin my reputation . I really don’t add very much at all. Honest. Just a smidge – to dilute the flavour, you understand.

Huoommm … as for those riders of the Witch King … why not suggest one or the other on the Gold Board? … huommm … of course it doesn’t mean that you’ll have a complete host that way, but why not suggest a mounted officer or a standard bearer of those terrible riders … hom … if you don’t want I could do it next time there’s suggestion open for mounted figures …. hom … though so far I never made any suggestion … hom

The same thought has been percolating in my own noggin, but I shall need to give some thought to exactly what such a figure would need to look like – and there lies the fundamental problem! After all, if the officer (or standard bearer) needs to match up with a hybrid unit cobbled together from other figure ranges, one would first need to have decided what figures one intends to use.

Thanks to Gavin’s suggestion I’m curently thinking about using the Perrymins Knights Hospitaller, but mounted on the armoured horses from the Vendel Miniatures Men of the West ‘mounted command’ set – actually, the Vendel cavalry figures might be worth considering themselves, though they’re likely to be a bit ‘chunky’ if they follow their usual style. And I dislike the shields! I’ll probably substitute round shields, whichever figures I eventually use.

Oh no, Master Barliman, no water please, from where I’m coming everything is trenched and flodded at the moment. I rather have something real. Nothing watered down please. Yes, I’ll have the amber nectar please. Hmm very nice indeed! Master Gandalf be blessed for his blessings. Nob could you please put another log on the fire so I can dry my belongings? Thank you, much appreciated!

I can imagine that business must be excellent running a tavern with not more than four or five regulars …. huoommmm …. is it that why some of the prices here are a bit … ahem … you know …. rhuoommm. Anyway just keep on … huomm … in case you’re not too busy you might walk over to the Mathom House and have a look at a picture I put up there an hour ago … rhuoommm … could be interesting, methinks.

Given the multi-cultural nature of the Witch-King’s army, I think having a variety cobbled together might look rather good. Does evil really care if the uniforms are smart and match up?

The surcoats on the hospitallers would look cool for Angmar methinks….

Judging from the Nazis’ (and, come to that, the Communists’) fetish for uniforms, I’d have to say yes! And even if Sauron or the Witchking weren’t too worried, the Minas Morgul troops were Men, and would be motivated by their own vanity and need for self-glorification.

Imrahil’s looking good, by the way, Master Tree.
